Coaches Gone Wild: Lou Piniella, Bobby Knight and the Top 10 Craziest Tantrums

Zack PumerantzMar 14, 2011

While tantrums may be detrimental to professional sports regarding class, there is nothing fans love more than watching a coach pop numerous blood vessels in an attempt to emphasize a point.

From Lou Piniella to Bobby Knight, these uniquely choleric coaches were always one bad referee call away from throwing chairs or stealing bases (literally) before exiting into an abyss of shame.

Like fighting in hockey, fans crave the guy who is willing to embarrass himself in a whirlwind of fury just to back his players up and put himself on the line.

Some coaches do it for honor, some for fame. Here is a list of the 10 best coaching tantrums of all time.

Enjoy.

10. Good Morning America

1 of 10

Brent Sapergia's tantrum has gone viral.

Coach of the Louisiana IceGators, he was seen on Good Morning America, and his video has become a YouTube sensation.

Clearly furious with the refs, Sapergia was tossing anything that wasn't stapled to the floor out onto the ice.

Honestly, he was probably just making sure his players had proper equipment.

9. Jim Playfair Not Playing Fair

2 of 10

Don't be fooled by the name. Playfair isn't as calm as he appears from a distance.

Unwilling to apologize for the incident afterwards, Playfair said, "I can't take it back. I can have you check my history and it's just not something I do consistently. It's not a motivational tool. It's something that happened in the heat of the moment."

It was an enjoyable moment, as his players even get a good chuckle from the tirade.

8. Oh What a Knight

3 of 10

Universally regarded as the angriest and most fiery college basketball head coach ever, Bobby Knight has a tough time holding in his emotions.

After his team gets called for six fouls in five minutes, Knight decides to make a statement.

7. Lou Being Lou

4 of 10

Piniella has established himself as the most temperamental manager in Major League Baseball.

There is nothing more uplifting than watching angry Lou spit and spray all over an umpire's face, and he has mastered the art.

This is just another example of Lou being Lou.

Fans love it.

6. Not Your Buddy Ryan

5 of 10

Somehow this fight is comical as short, hefty Buddy Ryan takes a swing at Kevin Gilbride.

While they may differ on what call to make, this reaction is perhaps slightly extreme.

Time to hug and make up. Gilbride will enjoy that bear hug.

As Gilbride, would you rather take a punch from Tom Coughlin or Ryan?

Rex and Rob must've loved this.

5. Devils Coach Gets Fiery

6 of 10

While this may seem a bit ludicrous, Ftorek actually had reason to be furious.

Devils forward Jay Pandolfo was lying on the ice with significant facial cuts, and the referee failed to blow the whistle. The Red Wings ended up scoring when Pandolfo was down.

Not too serious of cuts aside from the fact he needed 84 stitches.

Good job ref.

4. Hal McRae Done with Postgame Questions

7 of 10

He begins with the questioning so contently, and then it all comes to an end.

Don't ask the man stupid questions.

This is what happens when you coach the Royals.

"Put that in your pipe and smoke it."

3. Kevin Borseth Far from Boring

8 of 10

A good guy of the sport, Borseth should not have this rant define his career.

Resembling Robert from Everybody Loves Raymond during his attention fits, Borseth probably watches clips of his rant for a laugh before going to sleep at night.

Aside from his four minutes of fame, Borseth is a dying breed in his coaching style.

When is the NBA going to come calling?

2. Go Eat Another Doughnut

9 of 10

Taking place more than 20 years ago, this fight was epic.

Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld called referee Don Koharski a "fat pig" and told him to "have another doughnut."

Officials protested the handling of the situation and wouldn't work Game 4 of the NHL playoffs.

College officials were used for the crucial Game 4.

Not the ideal situation.

1. Phillip Wellman Not a Well Man

10 of 10

Perhaps the longest and most-loved tantrum to date, it is clearly a cry for attention.

Wellman, the manager of the AA Mississippi Braves, is yearning for a job with the big league club.

Evidently he is trying to prove his worth.

Didn't work out too well, as he makes a fool of himself and flips off the crowd as he exits through right field.

Epic tantrum.
