NHL Round-Up: Flyers Extend Lead in Eastern Conference with Win in Toronto

Kevin McGuireMar 11, 2011

The Eastern Conference leading Philadelphia Flyers may have stumbled a bit recently, but two straight victories have helped the Flyers pad their lead for the conference's top overall seed.

The Flyers held on for a 3-2 victory Thursday night in Toronto, dealing the Maple Leafs a critical blow to their own playoff hopes. Flyers goalie Brian Boucher made 27 saves while right-winger Claude Giroux scored a goal and added an assist in the Flyers' victory, avenging a loss to Toronto last week in Philadelphia by a similar 3-2 score.

Philadelphia took a 1-0 lead in the first period during a five-minute major penalty to Toronto defenseman Mike Komisarek for shoving a defenseless Daniel Carcillo into the boards behind the Toronto goal. Komisarek's hit from behind led to an ejection from the game.

"It's a 5-minute major -- he cross-checked him in the lower back from behind in a vulnerable position," Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. "Whether the guy's acting or not, he did kind of a wishbone into the boards. We would expect the same thing in return."

Toronto (68 points) currently sits six points behind the Eastern Conference's current eight seed, the New York Rangers (74 points). Philadelphia (90 points) increases their lead to four points over the idle Washington Capitals (86 points).

Buffalo Sabres 4, Boston Bruins 3 (Final, OT)

The Buffalo Sabres moved up to the seventh overall seed with an overtime victory on the road while the Boston Bruins missed a chance to tie the Washington Capitals in the standings. Buffalo center Brad Boyes scored at the 3:44 mark of overtime to give the Sabres a big road victory on a night when Buffalo rallied twice to tie the Bruins.

Hours before the game, Montreal police opened an investigation into Boston captain Zdeno Chara. On Tuesday, Chara received a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct after slamming Max Pacioretty of the Canadiens into a padded stanchion supporting a glass partition. On Wednesday, the NHL announced that Chara wouldn't be suspended but Montreal police are looking into whether or not to charge Chara for his vicious hit.

"Obviously, his state of mind is not at best, which is normal," Bruins coach Claude Julien said about Chara. "You understand what's going on. It's not easy but, like I said, I thought he handled himself well tonight."

Vancouver Canucks 5, San Jose Sharks 4 (Final, SO)

The NHL's top team in the standings, the Vancouver Canucks, needed a shootout to come away with a road victory against the San Jose Sharks Thursday night. The Canucks completed a perfect four-game road trip with the wild win, which saw three combined goals in the final two minutes, 13 seconds of the game. Vancouver goalie Cory Schneider made 44 saves and stopped all three shootout attempts by San Jose.

"We seem to be winning all sorts of ways, and that's a good sign," said Schneider, who was making a rare start in place of Roberto Luongo. "They really just kept coming and coming in the third period. We sort of held the fort, and Burrows had the big goal in the shootout to get the win."

Vancouver's lead for the top spot in the Western Conference (97 points) was increased to 11 points over the Detroit Red Wings (86 points). San Jose (85 points) currently owns the third spot in the Western Conference playoff standings.

St. Louis Blues 4, Montreal Canadiens 1

Former Montreal goalie Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves for the St. Louis Blues in a 4-1 victory for St. Louis. Halak played down the importance and emotion of playing his former team all week, but was happy to talk about the night afterward.

"During the game, you just want to focus on hockey. You don't want to think about the friends on the other side or ex-teammates," Halak said.

Montreal scored their lone goal when Jeff Halpern scored on their sixth shot of the night, but Halak made 22 saves in response. "Obviously, when you play for a team and then you get traded, you want to beat them every time you play them," Halak said. "We play Montreal only once a year, so that was my chance this year. I needed to make sure I gave it my best.

Montreal left winger Max Pacioretty missed the game and is out indefinitely with a severe concussion and fractured fourth vertebrae following a big hit by Boston's Zdeno Chara Tuesday night.

St. Louis (71 points) is currently eight points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, currently held by the Los Angeles Kings (79 points). The Montreal Canadiens are currently the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.

Phoenix Coyotes 3, Calgary Flames 0

The Phoenix Coyotes inched ahead of the Calgary Flames in the Western Conference standings with a 3-0 victory Thursday night. Phoenix and Calgary both have 81 points in the standings but Phoenix owns the tiebreaker and they have a game in-hand over Calgary.

The victory by the Coyotes moves them into the fifth spot in the conference and closer to being in position to playing at home in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Phoenix is also tied in points with the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, who own the fourth spot in the Western Conference standings.

Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov recorded his sixth shutout, making 39 saves in the game. "When you get shot after shot, it really keeps you in the game, and ready," Bryzgalov said. "Plus, guys were blocking shots when they needed, and the defense just played well."

Nashville Predators 4, Minnesota Wild 0

The Nashville Predators pushed closer to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 4-0 victory at home against the Minnesota Wild, who are also contending for the final playoff spot in the west. Nashville center Nick Spaling scored two goals and Pekka Rinne stopped 19 shots for the third shutout of his career against Minnesota and sixth overall this season.

"We're so used to playing those one-goal games, and we've been having a tough time scoring goals so obviously confidence-wise and everything, it was a big win," Rinne said afterward. "Four goals, they go a long way."

Nashville is one point behind the eighth-seed Los Angeles. Minnesota missed an opportunity to tie Los Angeles and remains two points behind the Kings.

Ottawa Senators 2, Florida Panthers 1

After a scoreless first and second period, the Ottawa Senators lit the lamp twice in the third period to rally for a 2-1 victory over the host Florida Panthers. Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson scored twice in the final nine minutes of the game and goalie Craig Anderson made 33 saves in the victory.

"It was a tight game," Karlsson said. "We stuck in there and finally got a crap goal, if I can say it like that. Both goalies played really well. We put as many pucks to the net as we could and finally one snuck in, and that was all we needed today."
