Jets-Cardinals: Brett and Jets Stomp Mistake-Plagued Cards, 56-35

Sergei MiledinSep 28, 2008

Brett Favre and the New York Jets offense showed up on Sunday in record fashion, outgunning the Arizona Cardinals, 56-35. Favre, who was nursing a sore ankle, showed no signs of wear as he connected six times in the end zone to three different receivers.

Both teams started poorly in the first quarter, a quarter that would see an interception, a fumble, and a blocked field goal.

Turnovers would be the theme for the Cardinals, as they turned the ball over six times, including on their first drive, which saw them recover their first fumble but they came up short on the following play, which would be seized by newly signed Hank Poteat.

The Jets wouldn’t capitalize, and Favre would throw an interception to Chike Okeafor on a play that looked to be offside on the Cardinals' defense. The Cards would then use that drive to set up a 37-yard field goal, only to be blocked, their first of the season.

Favre would connect with Laveranues Coles for a 12-yard TD and a 7-0 lead. Kurt Warner would throw an interception that would be returned by Darrelle Revis for a TD, making it 14-0.

Favre and Coles would connect on the next drive, after Arizona failed to gain entry into field-goal range, making the score 21-0. Warner would again be picked off, allowing the Jets to have the ball on the Cards' 24-yard line.

This time, Gang Green failed to put another TD on the board and settled on the FG, which was originally missed by Feely, but it was called back due to a roughing-the-kicker penalty.

The woes would continue for the Cardinals, who would fumble on their next possession, allowing the Jets to recover and set up the Favre/Coles connection yet again, making the score 31-0.

In case you couldn’t have guessed, Warner would be sacked again, fumble the ball, the Jets would recover, and Feely would add another, making the score 34-0 going into the half. This would set a franchise record for Gang Green for most points in the second quarter.

However, the Cardinals would not go lying down and would score three unanswered times, quickly making the score 34-21. Things looked like they were only going to get worse until the Brett Favre show resumed, which would now co-star Jerricho Cotchery, who hooked up with the QB for a 17-yard TD, making the score 41-21.

But Warner would respond on the next drive and make the connection with Anquan Boldin, making the score 41-28.

Favre and Cotchery would reconnect with a 40-yard TD bomb to push the lead to 48-28. The "anything you can do I can do better" game continued, as Warner and his newfound confidence would find Jerheme Urban and make the score 48-35.

The shootout would end shortly after, when Feely missed a 44-yard field goal, which came later rather than sooner and can be considered an accomplishment that the kicker missed one in last couple of minutes of the game instead of a crucial situation.

Warner would be sacked and fumble on the following drive, allowing the Jets to recover the loose ball. Favre then connected with rookie Dustin Keller for his sixth TD pass of the game. This would mark the first time Favre had thrown six TD in his career and tie Joe Namath for most TD's in a game.

The Jets would then score on the two-point conversion, making the score 56-35.

The game would end on scary note when Anquan Boldin would be carted off the field after a helmet-to-helmet hit with Eric Smith, resulting in a mixed team prayer as he was attended to.

The Jets, now 2-2, will head into their bye week with a newfound confidence, which saw them score the second-most points in franchise history. On the other side of the bye awaits a three-game stint against the Bengals, Raiders, and Chiefs, who have not shown much promise so far this season.

The team should be proud of themselves of the bounce back after Monday Night in San Diego and should hope to keep this well-oiled machine running.
