Alistair Overeem: Will He Sign with the UFC If He Wins the Strikeforce GP?
I recently wrote an article suggesting the UFC could be more lenient in regards to allowing superstar fighters to compete in other combat sports if they are world class.
A number of members corrected me in that the latest negotiations with Fedor, the UFC actually would have allowed the Sambo world champion to compete in Sambo tournaments.
Under this new light, my overall argument was deflated and it made the article predominately about Alistair Overeem.
Overeem is a top-10 heavyweight, but loves competing in Japan, fighting in both MMA and K-1 kickboxing.
He is a champion in both sports, and could be one the UFC's most prized acquisitions of all-time if he wins the stacked Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.
Considering Overeem has recently said that he is now dedicated to MMA, there might not be much reason for Overeem NOT to be signed to the UFC.
By signing with the UFC after hypothetically winning the GP tournament, it would erase the current notion that there are top heavyweights outside of the UFC that could challenge for the title.
Actually, regardless of who wins the tournament, they will immediately become a desired signee by the UFC, but you can bet that Strikeforce will not want to give them up as easily as they did Jake Shields.
For Overeem, while being the current favorite, winning the tournament is far from a foregone conclusion.
His first matchup in the tournament is against fellow top 10 heavyweight Fabricio Werdum, who already owns a victory over him. The two heavyweight stars are scheduled to clash on June 18.
If he does get past the field of the Strikeforce GP, he will be disputably the No. 1 heavyweight in the world.
Will he remain committed to MMA? Will there be any obstacles remaining between him and the UFC?
I hope it is obvious to him what fans all around the world want.
