Top 10 UFC Fighters Who Would Make Good Commentators

Andrew BarrJun 2, 2018

It happens all the time with professional athletes; a guy retires, but he still wants to be a part of the sport, so he's hired as a commentator.

So, these are my top 10 picks for UFC fighters that would make good commentators after they retire.

What I took into consideration while making my picks:

  • How beloved are they by the fans.
  • Do they have a good sense of humour.
  • How articulate do they seem in pre-fight interviews.

Not to say that I'm not a fan of Rogan and Goldberg as a commentating team, but I do think it would be a good idea for them to have a third man.

There have been instances in the past where a fighter has joined the commentating team for a pay-per-view and it usually goes quite well (exception: Rashad Evans at UFC 96).

Chris Leben

1 of 10

Leben would make a good commentator for a lot of reasons

He has great energy.

He is generally liked by the fans and is a well known fighter.

His pre-fight interviews are usually interesting.

The only flaw I see with Leben joining the commentary team is I don't know how technical he would be. He's not known to talk much about strategy before fights, he mostly just says things like: "We're gonna get in there and throw."

One of the advantages of having an experienced fighter on the panel would be the analysis of some technical aspects of the sport and I'm not sure Leben would offer that.

Matt Hughes

2 of 10

It's obvious that UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes would make a solid commentator.

He is a generally well-spoken guy.

He has a wealth of experience to draw from.

He's very good at breaking down technical aspects of the sport.

Although, there is some criteria Hughes doesn't meet. He doesn't talk with a lot of energy, so he could make a somewhat bland commentator. Also, while most fans like Hughes, there are a reasonable amount of fans I've com across that dislike him.

Chael Sonnen

3 of 10

Some people will probably disagree with this pick and I can see why.

Sonnen has been part of some of the most interesting and hilarious trash talk to take place in the UFC. Unfortunately, he tends to go to far with his trash talk and most feel that there is also too much of it.

That being said, there's no denying that the man has a way with words. He speaks passionately and is very entertaining.

I think he could make a really interesting addition to the commentators panel, although I'm concerned that he might actually draw attention away from the fights (because he does love attention).

Quinton Jackson

4 of 10

If there's one thing we learned from Rampage coaching two seasons of The Ultimate Fighter it's that he's a funny, charismatic guy.

If there's two things we learned, it's that he's a funny, charismatic guy and also a terrible coach.

But seriously, the man is entertaining.

He might not be the most articulate man alive, but when he talks, you listen.

Similar to Sonnen, there might be a problem with him talking too much, though.

Clay Guida

5 of 10

Clay Guida is a must-have for this list.

He has a giant fan following.

He is probably the most energetic man in the whole world.

He is well-spoken and speaks with a good deal of enthusiasm.

He is a humble guy and so he would probably make sure not to talk to much or cut off other commentators.

He might not be the best guy for explaining the technical aspects of a fight, but he would probably be decent at it.

Kenny Florian

6 of 10

Kenny Florian is one of a few fighters on this list who have actually commentated a UFC event before and, overall, I`d say he did a great job of it.

He is not the funniest, or most energetic man for the job, but he sounded natural when he was commentating.

Whenever he had something to add, it was usually interesting and insightful.

He was also good with give and take, allowing Rogan and Goldberg to do their share of the talking.

Rich Franklin

7 of 10

Rich Franklin is one of the most well-liked fighters in UFC and has always been known as a "company man." He will fight whoever, whenever if Dana White asks him too. He even took a couple fights at 195 lbs. that did nothing for his career, or to advance him closer to a title shot.

It seems like the least the UFC could to repay his dutiful services would to be to give him a cushy commentating job.

It isn`t like he wouldn`t be great for the job. He`s a relatively funny guy who speaks well and knows the sport.

Frank Mir

8 of 10

Not only is Frank Mir liked by most UFC fans, but he deconstructs the different technical aspects of fights better than any other MMA fighter I have seen.

Going into his fights, or after his fights, Frank tends to offer interesting interpretations of how his style matches up with whoever he is fighting.

He is another one of the fighters on this list who have previously commentated a UFC event and he did a very good job of it.

Forrest Griffin

9 of 10

I feel like I can say this without exaggerating: Forrest Griffin is the most well-liked fighter in UFC history.

The man emanates charisma and anyone who has read his book, Got Fight, knows that he is hilarious. Hilarious to the extent that he could probably be a comedian.

He is great with words, everybody loves him and Dana owes him big for being part of arguably the greatest fight in UFC history.

Randy Couture

10 of 10

Out of all the men on the list, Randy Couture makes the most sense as a commentator.

He is definitely nearing the end of his MMA career.

He is one of the most popular fighters to ever step in the cage.

He is an excellent strategist and so he would likely be able to offer interesting insights.

He has commentated fights before and done an excellent job.

That's all that really needs to be said.
