UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez Vs. Kampmann Fight Ends in a Controversial Decision
Once again, a UFC event has been tainted by questionable judging. UFC on Versus 3 has just passed us by and the main event has ended in controversy.
All three judges scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Diego Sanchez and the result was immediately booed by fans—many of whom clearly thought Kampmann won the fight.
Throughout the fight, Kampmann clearly landed the more damaging and effective punches, while also stuffing many takedown attempts from Diego Sanchez.
However, Sanchez, particularly in the second and third rounds, looked like the more aggressive fighter because he was moving forward and throwing a lot of wild punches (a lot which missed).
At the end of the fight, both men were bloodied up, but Diego's face was much worse. It was fairly obvious that Kampmann landed the most punches and did the most damage.
It's hard to look at it any other way: Diego was given the win because he moved forward aggressively and winged a lot of punches, even though Kampmann was effectively countering the whole time.
It seems like we've seen more and more big fights ending in controversial decisions these days.
BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch, Quinton Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida, Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Rua...
The list goes on.
As the sport of MMA evolves, it's becoming clear that we need schools to train the judges. It is obvious that many of the judges in MMA today don't have a very good idea of what they are doing.
Until this is remedied, we are going to see more and more fights ending in controversial decisions and that's not fair to the fighters, nor the fans who support the sport.
