UFC 127 Results: BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch Goes To a Majority Draw

Dale De SouzaFeb 27, 2011

There's a reason why people like Dana White say "Never leave a fight in the hands of the f**king judges!" on a day-to-day basis.

As UFC 127 proved, not even Jon Fitch is immune from getting somewhere close to a loss by fighting his fight against a guy with tough takedown defense like BJ Penn last night.

As a matter of fact, the first round of last night's main event was the first time in recent memory that anyone could recall Fitch going for his patented takedown offense and not even getting one.

What supports the argument for Fitch being "robbed," as some would say, was not the takedowns that he struggled but finally got on BJ, if you can believe it.

As a matter of fact, the first takedown that Fitch sucessfully got on BJ was one in which FItch merely held down BJ's lower body.

Thank the fact of BJ being against the cage for the first Fitch takedown in recent memory that Fitch wasn't able to "meat-grind" anyone with right off the bat.

The fight, for the first two rounds out of three, saw rounds that may or may not have been in BJ's favor due to BJ being able to not only defend and easily get up from Fitch's patented offense, but also his ability to get Fitch's back and almost sink in a rear naked choke numerous times.

All in all, though, those rounds were tough to score, as one could have said a few of them Fitch did win on just getting takedowns, while others could say BJ won the first two just by using his jiu-jitsu.

Then again, you had to be Dave Camarillo to expect the moments when Fitch turned in to BJ's guard, as well as the moments when he swept BJ from the bottom.

The one thing few could've seen coming was the takedowns that BJ landed on Fitch that led to a few of those submission attempts.

In any event, two of the three judges saw the bout 28-28, while one judge had it 29-28 for the former Purdue Boilermaker.

So much for "the winner gets the next crack at the UFC Welterweight Champion," right, Dana?

It's hard to say where you go from here, but the most logical thing to do here would make a rematch somewhere down the line.

There's obviously some dispute over whether Fitch won the fight or not, and it's not going to be resolved unless these two go at it one more time.
