UFC 127 Results: Should Penn and Fitch Rematch for Title if GSP Moves to 185Lbs?

Sean SmithFeb 26, 2011

Prior to UFC 127, Dana White had announced that the winner of the main event fight between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch would earn a welterweight title shot. As it turned out, the judges scored the fight as a majority draw (28-28, 28-28, 29-28 Fitch).

When asked by Joe Rogan after the fight, Penn said that he would be open to a rematch. Fitch was questioned during the post-fight press conference on a possible rematch. He responded, "I think it'd be an epic fight. I'm for it."

The UFC has had an abundance of useless rematches recently, but a rematch between Penn and Fitch could be one of the most meaningful rematches in UFC history if Georges St. Pierre vacates his welterweight title.

White has also said that, with a win over Jake Shields, St. Pierre could possibly make a permanent move to middleweight. If this scenario ends up taking place, it could set the stage for a title fight between Penn and Fitch.

With Chris Lytle losing at UFC 127, almost all of the other contenders at welterweight currently find themselves coming off of losses. Obviously, there would be backlash if Shields or any other welterweight was given a title shot on the heels of a loss. Thiago Alves, one who isn't coming off of a loss, has already been defeated by Fitch on two occasions.

Another contender on a winning streak, Carlos Condit, was still at least one win away from a title shot before he pulled out of his UFC 127 fight. Consequently, it wouldn't make much sense for him to fight for the belt when he returns.

So, that leaves Fitch and Penn remaining as two of the top contenders in the division. Fans are sometimes reluctant to watch rematches, especially when they feel that the first fight had a clear winner. However, with Penn's name and a belt on the line, this would be a hard fight for fans to stay away from.

For once, there is legitimate reasoning for the UFC to set up an immediate rematch. With controversy, a draw, and two deserving contenders, this fight has all the requirements for a fight that should be done over as a title fight. This is all assuming that St. Pierre beats Shields and vacates his title, of course.
