UFC 127 Results: Brian Ebersole Crushes Chris Lytle's Title Hopes
When Carlos Condit was forced to withdraw from his UFC 127 bout, Brian Ebersole was quickly called on to replace him.
For Chris Lytle, the change of opponent resulted in what many called a lose-lose situation.
If Lytle defeated Ebersole, which was expected by most, then it probably would not have done much in terms of climbing the welterweight ladder.
A loss to Ebersole, which was almost unthinkable even entering the second round of the fight at UFC 127, would derail what could be the final run at a title shot for Lytle.
From the opening bell, Ebersole made this an entertaining fight. Ebersole's first attempted strike came on a cartwheel kick.
Ebersole also fought off numerous guillotine choke attempts, some of which seemed to be sunk deep under his chin.
Ultimately, Lytle's commitment to his guillotine choke attempts may have contributed to his defeat.
By giving up positioning, Lytle took a lot of damage, including a nasty cut over his left eye, from Ebersole's ground-and-pound.
If Lytle had committed more to standing with Ebersole, this fight may have had a different outcome.
Aside from being dropped a perfectly timed knee in the second round, Lytle definitely was getting the best of the exchanges while the two fighters were standing.
It's hard to take anything away from Ebersole, though. A heavy underdog heading into this fight, Ebersole showed outstanding mental and physical toughness by beating one of the most experienced welterweights in the UFC.
It took 62 professional fights for Ebersole to finally get his chance in the Octagon. Ebersole made the most of it by defeating an established contender in a fight that he was expected to lose.
Now, Ebersole's unorthodox and relentless style makes him an instant threat to any UFC welterweight looking to climb the ladder.
