UFC 127 Results: Dennis Siver Upsets George Sotiropoulos With Unanimous Decision
One of the biggest fights at UFC 127 featured lightweights George Sotiropoulos and Dennis Siver.
The Australian, Sotiropoulos, was the clear fan-favorite in this fight and had completely mowed through all of his competition in the UFC.
He looked very confident walking to the cage and the fans chanted along to "TNT" by AC/DC as he got into the cage.
His opponent, Dennis Siver, is coming off of back-to-back wins over Spencer Fisher and Andre Winner. He is 6-1 in his last seven fights and was looking to get into the top-10 in the lightweight division.
Referee Leon Roberts got things started and the fighters met in the middle of the cage.
Siver repeatedly attempted left high kicks in the first minute of the fight but Sotiropoulos defended well and didn't take much damage.
George went for a takedown twice midway through the first round but Siver used excellent takedown defense to avoid going to the ground where he would clearly be the lesser-skilled fighter.
Siver landed a couple shots on Sotiropoulos, clearly rocking him twice with about a minute left in the round but Siver was unable to finish the fight.
Sotiropoulos looked completely outclassed on the feet and could not bring Siver to the ground.
Sotiropoulos' corner, namely Eddie Bravo, reminded him between rounds that Siver had a huge weight cut and could be tired going into Round 2. He looked tired himself, though, and a bit shocked at how many shots he took in the first round.
In the second round, Siver again tagged Sotiropoulos a few times early but George didn't seem to be as effected.
Sotiropoulos continued to look for an opportunity for a takedown as the Australian fans in attendance chanted for him, but Siver literally just tossed him off with pure strength.
Siver's takedown defense looks excellent but Sotiropoulos is starting to turn it on with about a minute left.
The second round was significantly closer than the first, with Sotiropoulos likely winning it—but now the question arises on how Round 1 was scored. If judges scored it a 10-8 round, then it would be practically impossible for Sotiropoulos to win by decision.
We entered the third round with Sotiropoulos still having not completed a takedown. Sotiropoulos looked a lot more energetic than Siver here in the third round but still couldn't get Siver to the ground.
Lots of back-and-forth kickboxing in Round 3 but Sotiropoulos seemed to be getting the advantage in the first half of the third round. Siver may have been losing the fight after a dominating first round.
Sotiropoulos continued to go for the takedowns but simply couldn't get it as Eddie Bravo yelled from the corner, "Two minutes left, you've got to get a takedown!"
With 30 seconds remaining, Siver and Sotiropoulos continues to stand and exchange blows but neither man had really landed any real big shots since Siver dominated the first round.
We finally went to a decision where the judges made their decision.
Judges' Decision: Dennis Siver wins by Unanimous Decision
This loss is very damaging for Sotiropoulos as he makes a run toward a UFC Lightweight Title fight, but on the flip-side, it was a huge win for Dennis Siver who has now won seven of his last eight fights in the UFC and has a real claim as a top-10 lightweight.
