Time Is Now: Is It Time to Alter CM Punk's Character?

RiZEFeb 21, 2011

Last night’s Elimination took the Devil’s structure to another level.

While RAW is remembered for John Morrison and his spots, Smackdown was an all-around brutal match up.

From Drew McIntyre’s ruthlessness to Rey Mysterio’s valiant efforts, Smackdown went in as the underdog and came out as the Alpha Male.

The events overshadow a significant moment in the RAW Chamber.

The antics of CM Punk and the general reaction of the crowd were almost completely ignored by viewers of the event. While it didn’t translate well on TV, fans were angry at Punk’s quick Elimination and rejoiced when he was reinstated in the match.

Before Punk joined Nexus, he was a part of the RAW commentating team. Despite being portrayed as a heel, Punk was over with the fans as if he were a face. How can we forget the time Punk answered the RAW GM’s email while Michael Cole was preoccupied in the ring.

The crowd went nuts with Punk chants.

Though his entry into the Nexus may’ve hurt his popularity with the fans, with each passing week the fans are growing accustom to 2nd City Saint. If the RAW chamber proved anything it’s that fans love CM Punk.

His infamous mocking of Randy Orton’s prelude to the RKO was classic.

The Straight Edge Messiah is a massively entertaining guy, and if WWE Creative had any sense whatsoever, they would change the role he portrays.

For example, Randy Orton was undoubtedly the WWE’s top heel from 2008 to late 2009.

The McMahon storyline made Orton a different type of Superstar and further explored his new gimmick—The Viper.

Orton was the guy everyone loved to hate, but his woes with fellow Legacy members Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase forced fans to see Orton in a new light. Randy Orton was a guy fans loved and they wanted to cheer for the Viper.

This forced WWE Creative to turn Orton into a tweener/face.

The difference between CM Punk and Orton is that Punk is actually entertaining. Many have attempted to label Orton the 2nd coming of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Orton is a Superstar but lacks the charisma of SCSA.

CM Punk is a different type of Superstar.

He’s extraordinary on the mic, great in the ring, and possesses all the tools to make him a Megastar. So if you still don’t understand exactly what I’m saying, the WWE should make Punk an Anti-Hero.

Let’s face it, The New Nexus is unentertaining, and with the unending flow of attacks each month, the angle in general has grown stale.

While Gang warfare isn’t a problem, the WWE certainly dropped the ball with this angle.

The only option would be to have Punk leave Nexus or have the group turn on the man who has led them nowhere but losses to Cena, Orton, and Morrison.

The big factor in my hopes isn’t Nexus, but Punk himself.

Some may argue that Punk will grow stale as a face like Orton did himself. Like I stated above, Punk is a very talented individual who would bring his unique sense of sarcasm that today’s fans would flock to get behind.

If Creative had any creativity whatsoever, Punk will emerge as the winner of his heated rivalry with Orton.

I ask that you don’t take my words as if I’m labeling CM Punk as the next Stone Cold Steve Austin. I’m not saying Punks head should be shaved (again), and I’m not saying Punk should be a beer drinking, vest wearing, tough sob.

CM Punk should be CM Punk.

As a man who’s followed Punk’s WWE Career since he debut in ECW, I’ve noticed the evolution of CM Punk and firmly believe it can continue with him being established as an Anti-Hero.

It would certainly be a breath of fresh air from the current money motivated programming.
