"Granite Chin" Tomasz Adamek will now fight sober Irishman April 9
Former WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion “Granite Chin” Tomasz Adamek’s fight against “The Clones Colossus” Kevin McBride was rescheduled Thursday for April 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Initially, the bout was tentatively slated to occur in Adamek’s home country of Poland on April 23.
Provided that Adamek (43-1, 28 KOs) manages to emerge victorious over McBride (35-8-1, 29 KOs), he is expected to battle one of the Klitschko brothers in September.
WBC World Heavyweight King Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KOs) will make a mandatory title defense against Odlanier Solis March 19, and his little brother, IBF, IBO and WBO Champion Wladimir (55-3, 49 KOs), is slated to scrap with England’s Dereck Chisora April 30.
If, as expected, both Klitschko’s trump their opponents in Germany this spring, “Granite Chin” will fight one of the Ukrainians at a new soccer stadium being built in either Warsaw or Wroclaw, Poland.
Adamek, 34, is also a past IBF, IBO and The Ring Magazine Cruiserweight titlist and suffered his only defeat as a professional against “Bad” Chad Dawson (29-1-0-1, 17 KOs) by unanimous decision in February 2007.
Since that loss, Adamek has won 12 consecutive prizefights.
McBride, a native of Ireland who currently resides in Dorchester and trains in Brockton, gained worldwide fame when he earned a sixth-round TKO triumph over “Iron” Mike Tyson in June 2005.
Ultimately, McBride’s demolition of Tyson (50-6-0-2, 44 KOs) ended the ring legend’s career.
After struggling with alcohol and enduring four consecutive losses, McBride, 37, beat Franklin Egobi by split-decision this past October.
McBride is six-foot-six and tips the scales at approximately 270 pounds.
“The Clones Colossus” is an adequate pugilist who possesses great strength.
However, the Irishman’s commitment and desire are extremely suspect and therefore he is the ideal opponent for Adamek at this particular time.
“The promoter that put together McBride vs. Adamek should be arrested,” said Roger “Pitt” Perron, 74, a longtime respected boxing trainer from Brockton who now works with Mike and Rich Cappiello at their gym, Cappiello Brother’s Boxing and Training. “McBride is so far out of shape, he’ll get killed by Tomasz.”
Conversely, Adamek’s an aggressive boxer who has proven he can withstand powerful blows.
Prior to McBride’s upset victory over Tyson, his advisor, Rich Cappiello, incensed “The Baddest Man on the Planet” with his chatter and taunts.
Tyson responded to Cappiello by yelling “You’re gonna get Kevin killed. Go sit down. I’m gonna gut him like a fish. He’s a tomato can.”
McBride is not an absolute “tomato can,” and Adamek will never “get Kevin killed.”
Nevertheless, Tomasz Adamek will decisively outclass McBride and easily win by TKO sometime prior to the sixth round this spring.
