UFC 130: Rampage Is Already Talking Trash to Matt Hamill

Sal DeRoseFeb 15, 2011

It didn't take long for Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to start running his mouth.

It seems everybody but Matt Hamill wanted Jackson to fight Rashad Evans and continue their already burning rivalry.

"We found out that Matt Hamill actually requested to fight Rampage. His camp pushed hard for it, turning down other possible opponents. When Quinton found this out, his opinion rapidly changed on Matt Hamill," Rampage's manager, Anthony McGann, said in an interview with Yahoo! Sports.

"Matt's strategically aiming at Quinton with the words if he takes out the ex-champ then he's in the mix for a shot. Those are brave words considering Rampage just beat [Lyoto] Machida. So the fight is set for May 28. Rampage doesn't take lightly to being called out."

Well, Rampage did what he does best when finding out he was fighting Hamill, calling him out and making a vow.

"He wants me? Well, he can have me," Rampage said to Yahoo! Sports. "I'm gonna knock him into tomorrow."

The funny thing is that UFC apparently offered Rampage the chance to fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, who will now face Jon "Bones" Jones. But Rampage was too heavy to take the fight. Rumor has it he was in the range of 250 pounds, too much weight to cut down on such short notice.

"We were signed to fight Thiago Silva on May 28 in Las Vegas. He had some problems and we were told straight away," McGann said. "Around the same time Rashad [Evans] got injured and we were offered Shogun on short notice."

Before anyone gets on the wagon and starts bashing Jackson for chickening out and making excuses for not fighting Shogun, they should know he actually wanted to fight Rua.

"Quinton wanted the fight but he was too heavy and there wasn't enough time. Both Thiago and Shogun are guys that will get into a fight with Quinton, something his last two opponents haven't. (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva gave (Jon) 'Bones' Jones the opportunity (to fight Shogun), as he was good with the short time and we waited for our opponent," McGann told Yahoo! Sports.

Jackson even went so far as to publish a tweet this weekend, saying he would rather fight Rashad than the surprising choice of Hamill.

"I'm not interested in fighting Matt, I'd rather fight Rashad, I have unfinished business with him," said Jackson via Twitter.

In company with Rashad, Jackson also apparently wanted a shot at Stephan Bonnar, too.

"We were given Hamill on the May show and initially Quinton was disappointed. Matt just wasn't one of the guys he has been focusing on. He really wants Rashad again or Stephan Bonnar because both guys are disrespectful to him," McGann said.

"He respects Matt as a tough opponent and he believes that Matt is someone who will put on a show which is what he loves to do. He just had never paid him no mind until Joe Silva offered him."

Well, however you look at it, Jackson seems upset to face someone like Hamill instead of his two rivals.
