Strikeforce Fedor vs. Silva Recap: The Medical Suspensions and Fallout After
While everyone, yet again, debates the doctor stoppage of a Fedor loss, and everyone tries to get a grip on what was an epic opening round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, medical suspensions have been released.
Looking at Fedor's face after last night is something to grimace over. After getting a beat down by a guy who oversized the legendary MMA heavyweight, Fedor's fight was stopped due to a doctor stoppage at the end of the second round.
Now, people are voicing their opinions on whether or not the doctor stoppage was warranted for Fedor.
I'm not a Fedor fan and I do not hate Fedor, but he quit last night. He told the doctor he couldn't see and that was it. There's no shame in him losing to Antonio Silva, especially when the guy is a behemoth compared to you.
Now, after last night, Fedor has suspended at least 90 days for head strikes, and suspended indefinitely pending a CT scan of his head and facial bones.
Regardless, no one was expecting Fedor to pop up within the next few months anyway seeing how his eye was basically a gigantic swollen beach ball.
After suffering his fourth straight loss last night, Andrei Arlovski is also done for at least 30 days due to his knockout loss to fellow heavyweight, Sergei Kharitonov. Three of Arlovski's last four losses have come via knockout and has started to raise questions about the former UFC heavyweight champion's future.
Arlovski should not only be on his way out of Strikforce, but also on his way out of the MMA profession. Arlovski has suffered some serious damage from those knockouts and just hasn't seemed as dominant as he once was.
One of the poorer displays of MMA in recent memory caused two medical suspensions. The bout between heavyweight's Chad Griggs and Gian Villante has caused them both to miss at least 30 days. Griggs is suspended due to a hematoma on his ear and Villante is suspended due to precautionary reasons stemming from his first round knockout loss to Griggs.
Both fighters had an excellent time standing up with Griggs visibly dominating and shaking Villante's core with a sweet mixture of heavy hands.
The Strikeforce promotion has suffered a great loss last night and now seems to be heading in a different direction. With the loss of the heavily hyped Fedor, Strikeforce now turns to Alistair Overeem who is coming off a 19-second knockout victory over former UFC heavyweight Todd Duffee. Hardcore fans will remember Duffee as the fighter with the quickest knockout in a UFC bout.
The second half of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals is set for April 9th in Japan. The card will feature bouts between heavyweights Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers, and also Fabricio Werdum versus Alistair Overeem.
