Potential WWE WrestleMania 27 Guest Hosts

Rob BeloteJun 7, 2018

Vince McMahon made his return to WWE scene on Feb. 7 to announce that on the Valentine’s Day edition of RAW, they would be announcing the identity of the individual who would be hosting the 27th annual WrestleMania event.

Folks are abuzz with speculation on whom that individual might be and as we’re less than 48 hours away.

Let’s join in with a list of names who it might be.

Mr. WrestleMania?

1 of 9

Shawn Michaels

The Heart Break Kid retired following his match with The Undertaker on last year’s WrestleMania card, and while some are speculating that he could return to the ring, I don’t see that happening this year.

He’s going to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame the night before WrestleMania, so he’ll definitely be in town for the event.

He would have no trouble standing in front of 70,000+ people, and unlike some hosts, he wouldn’t struggle to remember the identities of any of the performers involved nor would he seem out of place or have a split reaction from the fans.

He wants to be known as Mr. WrestleMania, and if WWE wants to dub him with that nickname, this would be a way to do it.

The Great One?

2 of 9

The Rock

Through various interviews and other means of communication, The Rock has mentioned that he wants to return to WWE in some manner, but he doesn’t want to do the same old RAW Guest Host thing that other superstars and celebrities have done.  He wants to do something different, something bigger, something that has never been done before.

That fits in quite nicely with the concept of a WrestleMania host, don’t you think?

Some people might say that The Rock could overshadow some of the things going on, but he could also bring back some fans who haven’t been as excited with WWE since he left.

Plus, he has a new movie coming out (Fast Five, the fifth in the series of Fast And Furious movies), so Dwayne Johnson will want to try to promote that.

He is included in the new video game WWE All Stars, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he continued his involvement with the WWE, as his Hollywood luster seems to have worn down a bit.

I don’t think he’ll be returning to the ring anytime soon, but I do expect him to start showing up for events on occasion instead of just the remote satellite hook-ups, all leading up to him being enshrined in the Hall of Fame when WrestleMania hits Miami next year (where he has a home and played college football).

Goldberg?

Bill Goldberg

This year’s WrestleMania event emanates from Atlanta, the home of WCW, where Goldberg made his rise to a level of popularity through in-ring dominance which has caused many to make the case for him going into the Hall of Fame this year.

While I don’t think that will occur, he’s certainly a possibility for both an inductee and to be the host of WrestleMania XXVII.

While none of the shows have been very mainstream, Goldberg has performed hosting duties on various television shows, has been in several movies and seems very comfortable in television interviews.

He might not be up-to-date on what’s happening in WWE, and he was never the best on the microphone in promos but he should still be considered an option.

Matty Ice?

Matt Ryan

Though I don’t know that he has ever hosted anything, he has stood in front of live audiences exceeding 60,000 fans before and given interviews, with millions of fans watching on television.  He has done countless commercials.  He has plenty of charisma.

It’s very well-documented that tons of NFL players are WWE fans, so there’s no reason to think that Matty Ice wouldn’t be comfortable speaking about the current storylines.

It’s not like he’d be a commentator, so his actual input wouldn’t have to be that big.

Still, his involvement might be seen as something which has limited interest from fans apart from the local Atlanta area, and it’s not like WWE has any trouble selling out the event, and his involvement isn’t likely to cause a spike in viewers (live or on pay-per-view).

Snap Into It?!

Macho Man Randy Savage

In past years, some might have scoffed and laughed at this potential, given the fact that Savage has wanted nothing to do with WWE (and the feeling was reciprocated by Vince McMahon).

However, with the release of WWE All Stars on the various video game platforms, Savage has been involved in helping to promote it,

It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that he might be involved as the host of the biggest event on the WWE calendar, especially given his historic past on some of the early WrestleMania cards and his ties to Atlanta given his tenure in the final few years of WCW.

The question does remain whether or not The Macho Man would be able to adequately hype the matches going on without making it too much about himself, and without going off the deep end with some crazy comments.

While that sort of thing would be awesome to see in a nostalgic version of RAW if Savage were the host, this is WrestleMania, so you want it to be as straight-forward as possible.

Plus, he doesn’t exactly still look like he does in the picture to the right.  Dress him all in black and give him a long white beard, and he looks more like Santa Claus than he does his previous self.

Also, it wouldn’t make much sense for him to host WrestleMania and not be in the Hall of Fame, and with Shawn Michaels already being inducted this year, that’s the biggest name the inductees list needs, and you wouldn’t want to overshadow either of them.

The American Dream?

6 of 9

Dusty Rhodes

We know that Dusty currently works for WWE, having seen him several times backstage, and he’s quite beloved in the south by rasslin’ fans who watched him back in the day (albeit as a heel / bad guy).

Apart from Ric Flair, the most popular wrestler in that general area might be Dusty Rhodes, and so he could be a huge draw.

Still, that draws the same argument that was given for why Matt Ryan might not be a great pick due to somewhat local interest.  Still, he is a Hall of Famer, one of the best promo guys in the history of the business, and best of all, he’s a wrestling guy.

It’s not like with some of the other hosts where they’re primarily a celebrity.  He would give the host spot some credibility…not that it needs it.

The Bieber?

Justin Bieber

Not that he would be on my list of folks who I’d want to host WrestleMania, but if WWE wants to continue to try to pull in younger viewers, they might just pick him to be the host.

With the big event already sold out, the crowd is not likely to be overrun by screaming young girls who are just there to see the teenage pop sensation (who is apparently a drummer prodigy).

This would also give him the chance to let a whole new group of potential fans know what he’s all about, trying to gain some “street cred” amongst the millions of people who would normally be watching WrestleMania–most of whom probably consider him to be uncool and wouldn’t give his music a listen just based on his reputation.

I’m certainly not a fan, but I have accidentally stumbled on a few of his songs at the end of movies and while flipping through radio stations, and when I didn’t know who it was, I thought the songs were above-average in quality.

The Omni-Present Seacrest?

Ryan Seacrest

If there’s a name that I dislike in this position more than Justin Bieber, it’s Ryan Seacrest.  I don’t watch American Idol, and at most I’ve seen about 10 minutes of the show in the past eight years when other people have been watching it and I’ve walked through a room.

The guy is known to be a great host and he has done not only American Idol, but also hosts a New Year's Eve show and his own radio show and probably other things that I don’t know about.  He’s certainly a polarizing figure, and he might be entertaining enough to do the job.

Vince McMahon has said that this person is one of the only people with the skills to get the job done and it can’t be denied that Seacrest has the resume to show that he’s capable of handling such a huge audience…. but would people possibly decide not to tune in to WrestleMania if Seacrest were named the one who gets the hosting duties?

The card might not include Triple H, The Undertaker, Chris Jericho and Christian, some of the bigger names to have appeared on the event in past years, and with the possibility of another polarizing figure–The Miz–being featured in one of the main events, fans could decide that Seacrest tips the scales in favor of not watching it.

The Lion Heart?

9 of 9

Chris Jericho

He has been gone from the scene for months, since getting punted in the head by Randy Orton, and he is said to want to focus on his rock band, Fozzy, but there are also reports of him working to get a contract done to continue working with WWE in one manner or another.

He’s certainly entertaining enough for the job, he knows what’s going on, he has been gone long enough to where he doesn’t have to be seen as a heel when he gets out there and he doesn’t have to play up any hostilities with anyone if he doesn’t plan on making a full-time return.

What do you think of the names I’ve mentioned?  Hate any of the options?

Who do you think it will be?
