Strikeforce Fedor vs. Silva Results: Silva Wins, Fedor Ponders Retirement
In the main event of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva, Antonio Silva became the second consecutive fighter to upset Fedor Emelianenko. Silva's size played a major factor in the outcome as Emelianenko was unable to escape from Silva's full mount.
Although Emelianenko was able to survive a dominant second round for Silva, the damage he absorbed from Silva's numerous hammerfists forced the fight to be stopped. After some confusion in the ring, it was finally announced that Emelianenko would be unable to continue because of his badly swollen right eye.
In his post-fight interview, Emelianenko hinted that he may be finished with fighting. The all-time great said that it may be God's will for him to retire from his great career.
Most likely, the decision is a direct result of the first time Emelianenko has ever lost back-to-back fights in his career. In his last fight, Emelianenko was submitted by Fabricio Werdum.
If this is truly the end, what a career it was for Emelianenko. The former Pride FC champion went nearly a decade without losing an MMA fight. During that time period, Emelianenko defeated great fighters such as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko Filipovic and Tim Sylvia.
Emelianenko had been a popular choice as the favorite to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. His potential semifinal meeting with Alistair Overeem or Werdum would have been the most highly anticipated fight in Strikeforce history and one of the more highly anticipated fights of all-time.
Although it will be a tough pill to swallow for Emelianenko's fans, they can revel in the fact that Emelianenko may have been the greatest fighter in MMA history.
