Come to Think of It...In Surprising Twist, Yankee Stadium Opts Out of Retirement

Bob WarjaSep 22, 2008

Following the lead of recent comebacks from the likes of Brett Favre and Lance Armstrong, New York's Yankee Stadium is coming out of retirement, the Stadium said in a surprising statement issued on Monday.

The Stadium, nicknamed "the House that Ruth Built," supposedly had its last game played on Sunday night in a sentimental and touching ceremonial tribute. However, in a press release issued early Monday morning, the Stadium said it regretted its hasty decision and has decided it wants to play at least one more year.

"After watching the teary-eyed responses of so many faithful Yankee fans and players Sunday night, the itch to come back has just gotten unbearable," the Stadium wrote. "It was like watching an old friend pass away—except the friend was me!"

The Stadium denied that having an unknown such as Jose Molina and ex-Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon hit the last two home runs had anything to do with its decision. But speculation was rampant among ballparks.

"You know that a proud old place like Yankee stadium don't want a nobody like Molina or an ex-Boston player having that distinction," said Wrigley Field. "If it were Jeter, or even Robinson Cano, maybe the old girl would have stayed retired."

Fenway Park had a different theory. "I think it was George," said the old Boston yard. "He couldn't attend the ceremony and what's a retirement party without the Boss?"

Whatever the reason, the response from the team was lukewarm, at best. Which has prompted the Stadium to ask for a trade.

The New York Yankees want to do the right thing in response to the Stadium's flip-flopping on its future. And as far as the team is concerned, that might mean showing the old girl the door—although working out a trade might be more palatable to the Yankees than granting the Stadium the release it has requested.

The Yankees have made it clear they're committed to going with the new Stadium across the street, having committed $1.6 billion dollars to build it.

Either way, it would be an ugly end to what has been one of the most celebrated partnerships in recent MLB history.

"As with all Yankees greats, The Stadium's legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in its personal intentions," the statement said. "The Stadium will always be a part of the Yankees family."

Come to think of it, even if that family is looking awfully dysfunctional these days.
