UFC 126 Results: Jon Jones Proves He Is Title Ready at UFC 126

Nick CaronFeb 5, 2011

The spectacular rise of UFC light heavyweight Jon “Bones” Jones continued at UFC 126 when he finished the previously undefeated Ryan Bader by submission late in the second round.

Choking Bader out via guillotine with less the minute left in the round, Jones did what we all knew he had in him by finishing off a top-10 fighter for the first time in his career.

During the post-fight interview, UFC commentator Joe Rogan had the pleasure of informing Jones of some unexpected news.

Current No. 1 contender Rashad Evans had injured his knee during training and would need to be pulled from his title fight on March 19 at UFC 128. With the event only six weeks away, the UFC needed to replace Evans with another worthy contender.

Enter Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones’ exhilaration was obvious, as the 205-pound phenom fell to his knees in happiness as Rogan announced that the UFC had decided that Jones would replace Evans in next month’s title fight.

At 12-1, Jones has completely taken the light heavyweight division by storm, amassing six victories in seven fights with his only “loss” coming by way of disqualification in a fight that he was absolutely dominating against Matt Hamill.

Just 23 years old, Jones is among the youngest fighters in the UFC today, but for what he lacks in experience he makes up for in destructive performances.

Though Jones had not been in any trouble in any of his previous fights, there is no denying that the most impressive win of his young career came on Saturday night against his fellow light heavyweight up-and-comer, Ryan Bader.

Bader had previously defeated Keith Jardine and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in back-to-back fights, knocking out Jardine with a huge punch and controlling Nogueira to a unanimous decision. But even given his track record against some great talent, Bader was not ready for the freight train that is Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones out-wrestled, out-struck and completely outclassed the very talented “Darth” Bader, certainly earning his shot at Shogun’s UFC light heavyweight title.
