LeBron James: Cleveland Cavaliers Making Case That There Is No Life After LeBron

Joye PruittFeb 5, 2011

With 23 straight losses, the Cleveland Cavaliers have now tied the record for the longest losing-streak in a single season, and this is probably a record that they have been longing to let stand alone.

Against the Memphis Grizzlies on Feb. 4, where Cleveland seemed to have a chance at a breakthrough, the absences of Daniel Gibson, Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao proved to be a lose-lose situation, literally.

J.J. Hickson had an impressive game with 31 points and 15 rebounds, and was in the company of a few other Cavaliers who scored in the double digits.

Even though Cleveland led in the fourth quarter, Memphis was not willing to have its four-game winning streak snapped by the worst team in the NBA, ultimately coming out on top with a 112-105 victory.

The losses are building up on the Cavaliers schedule and so is the sense of urgency.

The makeup of the team needs to be wiped away and re-crafted, because even though Dan Gilbert cannot deliver on his promise to bring a championship before James' new team can, he needs to show that he understands the problem and has no issue moving in a new direction.

Even if it means moving on from some of Cleveland’s most loyal players.

Williams expresses his sorrow for his part in the team’s woes every time he can, especially after the embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, but he can only say so much without proving himself in his home arena or away.

His defense, even before suffering from injury, has been mediocre and it just seems, from a fan's perspective, that he does not care anymore.

That may be false in Williams' heart, but when his body refuses to get the memo, the front office needs to consider trading him for a younger and more dynamic point guard.

Or maybe the Cavs should just sit back and wait for Kyrie Irving to appear on the 2011 NBA Draft list.

Hickson may be one of the team’s leading performers, but he is not a leader. He does not have the ability to create magic where it seems impossible, nor the ability to perform at a high level every time he plays.

While there should never be a time where a player sits back and cries all day and night over a loss, one cannot allow himself to get so numb to it that your response to each game is, "I’m sure we can pull off a few wins before the end of the season."

The Cavaliers as a whole are completely taken aback by their own failures, and they are draining them of their talent and drive.

Their sluggish demeanor is not going to change unless there are some new faces and new attitudes.

Trades need to take place in order to prove to Cleveland that there is life after LeBron.
