Send in Your Questions for the Legendary Boxing Personality Al Bernstein

King JFeb 4, 2011

Al Bernstein is probably the most likeable media figure in the sport of boxing today.

He has an amazing resume and track record with the sport and with major networks which include of course Showtime, ESPN and NBC to name a few.

Al has covered everything as a sportscaster from boxing to the NBA, NFL, MLB and even the Olympics.

In addition to his impressive sportscaster resume he is also a writer, editor, author, stage performer, recording artist, speaker and singer.

Many young, aspiring sports media people often cite Al Bernstein as the career that they desire to one day have and his very likeable personality that goes along with it.

I have had the honor of meeting Al Bernstein at several of the major fights he attended and we got a chance to talk during his breaks in the media conference room or of course the media buffet room. I personally would have to say he is indeed the nicest, most genuine man in all of boxing.

Often times when sportscasters are in front of the camera they have their very cheesy smile and charm turned on but as soon as the cameras are turned off their true colors begin to show, that is not the case for Bernstein.

Al is, believe it or not, just as nice as he appears on camera, if not nicer when the cameras are off. I've seen him talk to fighters off camera and wish them well before their fights and say only positive things about them even after they have walked far away, when most people would most likely say negative, critical things.

Bernstein hails from my hometown of Chicago, hence why they often say people from Chicago are the most down to earth people in America. We have the meanest streets with the highest murder rates, but the tough people of Chicago are often genuine and real.

Let's be honest: The Showtime team and production quality have not always been up to par with HBO championship boxing. Personally I often cringe when certain other boxing analysts are calling the fights on Showtime and Bernstein is not there.

Al however is often times the wiser, more experienced, knowledgeable, objective, professional voice of reason to counterbalance some of the other poor boxing commentators that leave you throwing an uppercut toward your TV screen.

Even though HBO has often been viewed as the higher quality production of boxing with big-name fighters, Showtime boxing is superior to HBO boxing for the following reasons:

1. They tend to show the more action-packed fights

2. They provided us with both the Super Middleweight Tournament and Bantamweight Tournament

3. Al Bernstein

4. Unlike HBO, Showtime shows the hardworking ring card girls on camera.

Then of course you add the biggest name in boxing right now who recently became a Showtime fighter...some fighter named Manny Pacquiao. You might have heard of him before.

I am scheduled to interview Al Bernstein the weekend of the Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire fight in Las Vegas, so please send in your questions for him and if we choose to use them we may cite you as the source of the question when the interview is transcribed.
