UFC: 5 Reasons Why Anderson Silva Would School Jon Jones

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

Anderson Silva is the pound-for-pound king of the MMA world. He is the best fighter on the planet.

Many people have been saying that Jon "Bones" Jones is the future of MMA. Many people have been saying that he is the future P4P king of the MMA world.

This fight looks more and more improbable by the day, but if it were to happen, here are five reasons why Anderson "The Spider" Silva would school Jon "Bones" Jones.

Experience

1 of 5

Anderson Silva has the fourth-most fights in the UFC of all middleweights, and he will move into a three-way tie for second come Saturday.

He has won 12 straight inside the Octagon, and 13 straight overall. In the past six years, his only loss is a DQ to Yushin Okami. Silva is one of the most experienced fighters inside the Octagon.

On the other hand, Jon Jones has only been fighting for three years. He has 11 wins, and one DQ loss that shouldn't be.

Jones has faced experienced fighters before, Vladimir Matyushenko and Stephan Bonnar both fell at Jones' expense. However, Silva is a different animal from the two of them.

Silva's experience would be the beginning of Jones' downfall. Jones goes for a spinning back elbow, Silva sways and comes back at him with a straight right hand, which brings me to my next point.

Striking Ability

2 of 5

The striking ability of Anderson Silva is undeniable.

Seven of his 12 UFC wins have come via (T)KO, and 15 of 27 overall.

It is true that Silva has never faced a striker as good as Belfort, as the recent UFC promos have pointed out, but that shouldn't take away from his striking ability.

Silva is one of only two people to TKO Chris Leben, the other being Brian Stann.

Silva is one of three people to TKO Rich Franklin (Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort).

Silva is the only person to TKO Nate Marquardt.

The man is an animal, and Jones has never faced someone with his ability. Bader will be the next test to see where Jones' striking ability lies at this point in his career.

Silva is such a good striker in large part due to his...

Speed

3 of 5

Yesterday, I was fortunate to find myself watching UFC Unleashed, all about the Spider.

First, was him against Chris Leben. I don't think anyone will ever end a fight with Leben in under a minute again. In just 49 seconds, Leben's night was done. That was his fastest fight ever. Silva showed off his striking ability, his clinch strength and more importantly, his speed.

Up next was his second fight in the UFC, which was against Rich Franklin for the middleweight title. Silva TKO'd Franklin in 2:59. This guy was the new UFC middleweight champion, and he hadn't even fought for five minutes yet.

The third fight they showed was against Travis Lutter, and although some chinks in the armor of the Spider were exposed (takedown defense), he got a chance to show us his BJJ game by submitting Lutter, also a BJJ black belt, with a triangle that he locked in so quickly that I nearly missed it.

The fourth fight was against Dan Henderson, and I'll get back to that one.

The fifth fight was against James Irvin, where he put The Sandman to sleep in a minute and one second.

Jones is fast, but I'm pretty sure he can't compete with what the Spider is throwing. Getting back to Henderson, and continuing off Lutter...

Jiu-Jitsu Skills

4 of 5

Now, I'm not going to lie. I have no idea what kind of BJJ skills Jones is packing. Although, I feel pretty safe in assuming they are not up to the credentials of Anderson Silva.

Silva tapped out Travis Lutter, a BJJ black belt, with a beautifully executed triangle choke.

Silva tapped out Dan Henderson, an Olympic-caliber Greco-Roman wrestler, with a rear-naked choke after getting his back.

Silva tapped out Chael Sonnen, a fantastic wrestler who dominated him for 23:10, with a triangle armbar.

Jones tapped out Jake O'Brien, who was cut soon after.

Silva is a black belt in BJJ, Jones is not.

This one is pretty straightforward. Jones could ground and pound Silva for however long he wants, and Silva can still submit him.

Jones' Chin

5 of 5

Jones has never had his chin tested in a fight. Matyushenko is a wrestler, Vera was in the middle of his downward spiral, Matt Hamill is a wrestler, Jake O'Brien is hardly worth mentioning, Stephan Bonnar is a jack-of-all-trades and André Gusmäo is also hardly worth mentioning.

Silva has one-punch KO power, and he would be looking to catch Jones.

As I said earlier, Jones goes for a flashy move, Silva counters and sends him to the canvas.

Saturday night, Jones will have his chin tested against Ryan Bader, who could be the one to stop the hype train.
