WWE: Deciphering the '2.21.11' Promo and Its Impact

Andrew J. KearneyFeb 2, 2011

As you've all heard and have been speculating, Sting may be on his way to WWE. That mysterious, yet genius "2.21.11" promo that aired twice on RAW last night evidenced that.

"The Man They Call" Sting could make for the biggest wrestling news in quite some time.

Such a promo could've only come from the mind of a shrewd businessman who knows exactly what he's doing.  That man can only be one: Mr. Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

While McMahon likely doesn't give the IWC his unequivocal attention, he knows just how to gauge the cult that it's become.  This may all be a swerve; merely a tease as they couldn't bear to see the IWC right about something.

But I ask, what if it's not?  What if the Stinger shocks the world and debuts on that, the most anticipated day that wrestling has had in a while.

Judging from the video, WWE is still as smart as they've ever been.  There were clues in some instances, but they definitely gave nothing away per say.  This was the ideal tease for RAW that spiked ratings instantly.

We must keep in mind though knowing the cunning Mr. McMahon, is this all potentially a farce to get our attention through Elimination Chamber on the Road to WrestleMania?  I don't believe that even McMahon is naive enough to pass up on this.

The second "2" did in fact appear to be a scorpion's tail, which can only mean one thing: Sting.

Also, many have said that this particular promo is reminiscent of Sting's Starrcade 1997 promo.

Even when the numbers fade away, the "facepaint" is awfully familiar.  To some, even the word "Sting" can be made out of the smoke.  These are more than just "smoke signals," folks.

Also, the dilapidated house has to mean something, but what?   Is that representative of a company (WWE) that's falling apart and needs to be saved by one man?

If this continues, it could be some of the best promotional packages ever continued. The question now is, how do they go forward?

Does the WWE continue to show this package on a weekly basis or perhaps alter it each week leaving more clues.

While it's been said that signing Sting is McMahon's chief priority in 2011, that doesn't mean it will definitely happen.  McMahon has already lured away two members of TNA's Main Event Mafia, could he now bring a third over?

With the third being the biggest name of them all and probably the greatest wrestler never to compete under the WWE banner.

That being said, let's assume Sting signs with the WWE and sends the IWC, and the wrestling world in general, into a frenzy.  It's the most logical solution to all of this at the present time.

While nothing's obvious yet, it may become increasingly apparent in the coming weeks. For now though, we are left with a perplexing dilemma to solve and think about.

I've always loved wrestling, but this is the most interesting it's gotten in quite some time.  Let's be honest people.  No matter what happens on "2.21.11" the entire world will be watching and anticipating.

Likely and fittingly, it will come down to the final segment of the night.  Will "The Icon" be standing atop the ramp at the 11:00 ET mark?  We must wait to find out.

Sting is perhaps the only major name in wrestling history who hasn't worked for Vince McMahon's WWE.  When all the other WCW guys came over once McMahon bought them out, the Stinger was said to be worried about how his character would be used.

Fast-forward 10 years later and that day may be upon us.

Sting made an impact in WCW and was one of their all-time greats.  It's still shocking that he never came over as the whole "Invasion" angle would've been a lot more interesting.

Even so, the Stinger has remained in phenomenal shape and at 51 still can compete. He's bounced around overseas and TNA over the years, but never found a home in WWE.

The entire world is anxiously awaiting "2.21.11."  If it's a disappointment by any means though, the company could suffer consequences from its fans.

Signing Sting additionally does wonders for the WWE's biggest event of the year, WrestleMania on April 3.  The match that everyone is talking about is Sting vs. Undertaker with Taker's streak on the line.

That would draw the biggest PPV buys in company history, plus the rest of the card will need to be solid.  Many would pay their hard-earned $49.95 (+ tax) to see "The Icon" vs. "The Phenom."

That wouldn't be difficult to sell at all.  Even if not, when has WrestleMania ever been hard to sell?  It's the "GranDaddy of 'Em All."
