UFC 126 Results: Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and Reaction From Night of Fights

Sal DeRoseFeb 5, 2011

UFC 126 closed in a very great way for UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva and upcoming light heavyweight fighter Jon "Bones" Jones.

Jon Jones entered the fight as one of the most heavily hyped fighters of the night and in the UFC.

In two rounds Jones proved why he was deserving of that hype, quickly putting out opponent Ryan Bader with a guillotine choke to end the fight.

After the fight, Jon Jones was presented with the opportunity to fight in place of the injured Rashad Evans against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua for the light heavyweight championship.

Jon Jones has been more than deserving of this chance at the light heavyweight crown. Jones is 12-1 overall with his only loss coming against Matt Hamil after being disqualified for illegal elbows. Otherwise, Jones has pulled off great wins against Brandon Vera, Vladimir Matyushenko and now Ryan Bader.

Anderson Silva came in hearing how Vitor Belfort was going to challenge him. How Vitor was the strongest opponent he has yet faced.

Well, late in the first round, Silva landed a kick straight to the face of Vitor, quickly knocking Vitor to the mat and subsequently ending the fight.

Silva has now defeated the middleweight division. Just a personal opinion and one that has been echoed by many fight fans, and Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre fight needs to happen. Silva and GSP have all but wrapped up their respective divisions and having this fight would be huge. I don't think giving Vitor another shot would be an option at this point either. He seemed like he was getting into it. Just a thought.

Forrest Griffin came in after being out more than a year and outdid Rich Franklin in every conceivable way.

Griffin looked great in his return, basically grinding out Franklin in the first and stunning him in the second. Knowing he had the win in hand, he played it pretty conservatively in the third round.

Griffin could make a title run in 2011 and with a loss to Griffin, Franklin seems to once again be stuck as to where his future goes next.

Welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Carlos Eduardo Rocha fought to a split decision in favor of Ellenberger.

Ellenberger was originally slated to face Jon Fitch, but Fitch now faces B.J. Penn later this month at UFC 127. Ellenberger was really not even close to impressive as the fight could have went either way (in my opinion, though, he won by a hair).

If Ellenberger is to face Fitch, or even someone like a Thiago Alves, in his next fight, he will have to be way more impressive than he was against Rocha.

Finally, former bantamweight champion, Miguel Torres faced off against Antonio Banuelos.

Torres' jabs seemingly handled Banuelos, breaking his nose in the process. Torres really didn't pick up until the third round, which is weird considering he normally is quick and sharp from the get-go. Torres was also formerly ranked in the Pound-for-Pound Top 10 on numerous sites.

The much bigger Torres showed a pretty great display of boxing regardless and should still be a top contender in the bantamweight division after his unanimous decision victory over Banuelos.

All in all, UFC 126 was a pretty successful night to me. I thought each fight was worth watching (even the undercard fights) and showed the best in each fighter.

For the next few weeks people will likely argue over Anderson Silva vs. GSP and who's the real P4P king.

One thing is for sure, with one awesome front kick to the face, Anderson surely gave his backers one more reason to back him come those discussions.
