Jon Jones: 5 Reasons Why He Would Destroy Anderson Silva

Will AndersonJun 7, 2018

With all the talk about this Saturday's major UFC card during Super Bowl weekend, it's tough not to conceive how great it would be to see Jon Jones take on Anderson Silva in an epic light heavyweight showdown.

I know what you're thinking, "No way Jones beats Silva!" Well, I can give you five reasons why you should think otherwise.

No. 5: Youth

1 of 5

At age 23, Jones is just now only cracking into his potential as a fighter. With just 11 pro fights under his belt, "Bones" is not suffering all the wear and tear that a fighter 10 years his senior would be dealing with.

Meanwhile, Silva, 35, is on the wrong side of 30 and fast approaching the downside of his career.

Jones' age provides him with a massive advantage from the standpoint of heightened reflexes, high-level speed and a naive fearlessness that a fighter Silva's age has started to lose.

No. 4: Power

2 of 5

Jon Jones' power is off the charts. He uses his explosiveness to overwhelm opponents by tossing them around the cage like rag dolls and then has his way with them.

The versatility of his striking combined with a ton of power make for a very dangerous fighter.

No. 3: Wrestling

3 of 5

Jones has a pretty solid background in collegiate wrestling.

As a New York state wrestling champ in high school and JUCO national champion for the powerhouse Iowa Central Community College, Jones has the ability to take you down anyway he wants.

And from there you're in a whole world of trouble.

No. 2: Size

4 of 5

While Anderson Silva is about 6'3" and probably walks around at 215 pounds. Even with that, Jones still would be a much bigger fighter.

It is very conceivable that with a little more bulking up (a la Overeem), Jones has the frame to easily move up to the heavyweight division.

When you take that into consideration, it's tough to see Silva defeating a fighter who can not only nearly match him in speed, but carries more natural size and strength.

No. 1: Killer Instinct

5 of 5

The the key factor to making a great fighter is the ability to close out a fight. BJ Penn—when he's on his game—exhibits this ability, as does "Shogun" Rua, and a host of other fighters.

Jon Jones at 23 has no fear of going for the jugular when it comes to ending a fight, just ask Brandon Vera.

It is this part of Jones' arsenal which makes him most dangerous to Silva.

As of late, "The Spider" has shown that he likes to linger in a fight, and it nearly brought his run at middleweight to an end last summer.

In Jon Jones you have everything that Chael Sonnen is—plus much, much more.
