Super Bowl Sounds: Listing Every No. 1 Song From Every Super Bowl Year
Since 1967, a champion is crowned in the NFL in an event called the Super Bowl.
Two teams battle their hearts out and whichever team is left standing at the end, they are forever glorified.
There have been eighteen different champions in Super Bowl history and every team is deserving.
In the music industry, it is a prestigious honor to be the artist who owns the number one song of the year.
No matter how annoying, terrible, or boring the song may be, somebody was listening to it to make the song a number one hit.
Which song was the number one song during the 1977 Super Bowl?
Click to discover which songs were number one from every Super Bowl year.
1967: The Monkees
1 of 44In the very first official Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs squared off in 1967. The Packers ended up demolishing the Chiefs with a final score of 35-10.
The Monkees demolished the billboard charts with seven consecutive weeks at being at number one with their hit song, "I'm A Believer."
The Packers should utilize this song for their Super Bowl campaign to create a high level confidence for their fan base.
1968: Beatles
2 of 44The Packers once again won the Super Bowl, for the second time in its two year existence, by defeating the Oakland Raiders 33-14.
But, the Beatles had the country in their hands after delivering their popular hit song, "Hey Jude," which was number one for nine straight weeks.
I could listen to this song for hours with its sweet melody.
1969: Marvin Gaye
3 of 44In the third annual Super Bowl, in what is considered to be one of the biggest upsets in sports history, the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7.
The New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed the heavily favored Colts will be defeated in the Super Bowl. After a hard fought battle, Namath lived up to his words.
And the rest was, "heard through the grapevine."
1970: Simon and Garfunkel
4 of 44In Super IV, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Minnesota Vikings squared off. The Chiefs ended up dismantling the Vikings 23-7.
However, the Chiefs would have never had a chance to win this game if their quarterback had not been cleared with suspicion of illegal sports gambling.
Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson was mentioned in a FBI investigation into sports gambling when the arrest of Donald Dawson, who is not related to Len, was carrying more than $400,000 along with Len's phone number. The reports were later reputed.
In the meantime, Simon and Garfunkel wrote a song speaking about honesty and retribution called, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It's guilt-riven song would last six weeks as number one on the billboards.
1971: Three Dog Night
5 of 44Super Bowl V featured Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley and Baltimore Colts Hal of Famer Johnny Unitas. The Colts got their revenge on the Cowboys after being upset a year before against the Jets. The final score was a nail-bitter 16-13.
Baltimore nation was rocking to Three Dog Night's song, "Joy to The World," while it lasted six weeks as number one.
1972: Roberta Flack
6 of 44In Super Bowl VI, the Dallas Cowboys embarrassed the Miami Dolphins with constant turnovers as the Cowboys would go on to win 24-3.
This song, which lasted six weeks as number one, is fitting for the Cowboys as it was the first time they saw a Super Bowl trophy.
Besides, how can you resist a soft, sexy voice of a woman who is pouring her heart out to you?
1973: Roberta Flack
7 of 44Roberta Flack is at again. For a second straight year, Flack earned the honors for her song being the longest on the number one charts with "Killing Me Softly With His Song," in 1972.
This is a dagger to a man's heart after she carried men off their feet with her 1972 hit song, " The First Time Ever I saw Your Face," and now she is singing about a man who destroyed her heart.
I understand that men can be absolute idiots, but we know when we did something wrong. A song being written about it just embarrasses us.
I guess once we are in a woman's dog-house, we are there for good.
Oh, and the Miami Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII.
1974: Barbra Streisand
8 of 44After jumping on the scene with her exceptional movie "Funny Girl," and "Hello, Dolly!", her beautiful voice brought her to great heights. She is one of the most successful singers with more than 71.5 million albums shipped in the United States and 140 million albums sold worldwide. Streisand holds the record for the most top ten albums of any female recording artist
Streisand's song, "The Way We Were" in 1974 stayed at number one for three weeks.
Super Bowl VIII Recap: Miami Dolphins defeated Minnesota Vikings 24-7.
1975: Captain and Tennille
9 of 44If only songs like Captain and Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together," were true, we would not have a ridiculous high divorce rate today.
We do try to keep things together even with all the turmoil, but sometimes love can not save the worse relationships. Ask Tiger Woods about it.
Super Bowl IX Recap: Pittsburgh Steelers defeat Minnesota Vikings 16-6 under the arm of Terry Bradshaw.
1976 : Rod Stewart:
10 of 44Can you believe this song was at number one for eight consecutive weeks? Don't get me wrong it's a great song, but eight weeks great?
I figure this was a song many men used to seduce the ladies and which might explain the increase of birth's in 1976.
Maybe tonight was the night in 1976, and I hope for most, it was better than "alright."
Super Bowl X Recap: In a classic match-up where Terry Bradshaw faced Roger Staubach, the Steelers ended up defeating the Cowboys 21-17.
1977: Debby Boone
11 of 44Boone was never able to live up to her song, "You Light Up My Life," that lasted ten weeks as number one.
The Minnesota Vikings, who made it to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in eight years, were very similar to Boone's one hit success. They both had numerous chances turning their fortune around, but they never could climb that final hurdle.
The Vikings were once again defeated in Super Bowl XI, by the Oakland Raiders 32-14.
1978: Bee Gees
12 of 44The seventies were alive with Bee Gee hits such as "Night Fever", which lasted eight strong weeks as number one.
However, the music video is probably one of the most creepiest and most awkward ever. Every time I watch it, I know I am going to wake up the next day with a nightmare.
Super Bowl XII Recap: Dallas Cowboys defeat Denver Broncos 27-10.
1979: Knack
13 of 44I never figured out what a "Sharona" exactly was. I assumed it was a nickname for a woman named Sharon, but that was too obvious.
Then, I started thinking if there were any body parts that rhymed with "Sharona" that may associate with it, but I did not have any luck.
I finally Googled what a "Sharona" was and I was disappointed to find out it was indeed, a woman's name or it was a way to call someone "Honey".
Super Bowl XIII Recap: Pittsburgh Steelers recover a late onside kick to hold off a furious Dallas Cowboys comeback by winning 35-31.
1980: Kenny Rogers
14 of 44I never listened to any Kenny Rogers music before. I'm sure he is great. I'm sure there are die-hard Kenny Rogers fans out there who wear "Kenny beards" to concerts.
But, MAD TV will forever tarnish my view on Mr. Rogers with their, "Hi, I'm Kenny Rogers," where he plays a moronic drunk.
Super Bowl XIV Recap: Pittsburgh Steelers claim the prize once again by defeating the Los Angeles Rams 31-19 in a game where five lead changes was featured.
1981: Olivia Newton-John
15 of 44In a song where it is a metaphor for the mentality every football player has to be in, Newton-John's song "Physical" was number one for ten consecutive weeks.
For much of a great song it was during that time, the music video is atrocious. It looks like an opening scene from Arnold Schwarzenegger's documentary, "Pumping Iron."
Super Bowl XV Recap: Oakland Raiders become the first wild card team to win the Super Bowl by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10.
1982: Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
16 of 44As much as you love or hate this song, today, it is still virtually everywhere. Bars and clubs have joined in on Joan Jett's notorious song that lasted seven weeks as number one on the billboards.
Super Bowl XVI Recap: San Francisco 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 26-21.
1983: Michael Jackson
17 of 44On March 25, 1983, Michael Jackson debuted one of his greatest and signature moves to the world while performing his Grammy winning hit, "Billie Jean": the moonwalk. A legend, a star, and the "King of Pop" was born.
I have always tried to master the way he moves, but nobody can dance like Jackson. I always find myself tripping on my own two feet.
Super Bowl XVII Recap : Washington Redskins defeat the Miami Dolphins 27-17.
1984: Madonna
18 of 44In Quentin Tarantino's movie, "Reservoir Dogs," he goes in great detail discussing the metaphoric meaning behind Madonna's number one hit song of 1984, "Like A Virgin."
As he puts it, the song is "not about this sensitive girl who meets a nice fella." Instead, he meets a guy who is "like Charles Bronson in the 'Great Escape', he's digging tunnels," who makes her feel something she has never felt before until she met this guy: pain.
"Hence, like a virgin."
Super Bowl XVIII Recap: Los Angeles Raiders are not a Super Bowl "virgin" after defeating the Washington Redskins 38-9.
1985: USA For Africa
19 of 44This song, which lasted four weeks as number one, was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, produced by Quincy Jones.
It was recorded to raise funds for the drought that plagued many citizens in Ethiopia from planting crops and thus leaving them left in starvation.
Super Bowl XIX Recap: In game that featured a pair of Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Dan Marino and Joe Montana, the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins 38-16.
1986: Dionne and Friends
20 of 44This song reminds us our friends are always there for us and when times are dark, we know we can count on them to be there for us.
We are suppose to trust our friends when they ask us to hide a bag for them and do not look inside or even ask what is inside.
And when the cops show up, we are suppose to stay by our friends and to tell the cops we do not have any recollection of how we received this bag or who the person was who gave it to us.
And when we are being prosecuted, possibly facing eight to twenty years in prison, we are suppose to keep our lips quiet.
We serve our time, honorably.
Why?
Because that's what friends are for.
Or so I hope that was my friend.
Super Bowl XX Recap: Chicago Bear clubber the New England Patriots 46-10.
1987: Bangles
21 of 44Is it just me, despite their outdated hair-styles and clothes, but are the singers in the Bangles hot or am I crazy? The country most have thought so as this long last four weeks as number one song.
Interesting fact about this song: The songwriter Liam Sternberg got the idea when he was on a ferry boat, and saw people struggling to keep their balance. The way they held out their arms and fumbled around made it look like they were doing Egyptian movements, and if the boat moved suddenly, they would all fall over.
Super Bowl XXI Recap: New York Giants defeated Denver 39-20.
1988: George Michael
22 of 44The "Boy George" era was alive.
And so was my hate for tight jeans.
Super Bowl XXII Recap: Washington Redskins defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10.
1989: Chicago
23 of 44Chicago's hit song, "Look Away," discusses a man's heart-break from a recent break-up and he does not want his ex-lover to see him in an emotional state of mind. Therefore, he promptly and sincerely asks her to "look away" every time she is near him.
I have been there before with my heart being ripped out of me like it was nothing. However, my heart-break was not from a woman, but from the agony of sports event. I cried for hours and hours as I did not want anyone to "look my way."
Here are some of those moments:
- Witnessing the Chicago Cubs 2003 NLCS collapse in game six, also known as the "Steve Bartman Game." I was only a couple rows away from this fool.
- University of Illinois loses to North Carolina in the National Championship
- Back to back years with first round exits from the Chicago Cubs in 2007 and 2008.
- The Chicago White Sox winning the World Series. This is agony for any Cubs fan.
- Anytime the Cardinals, Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Lakers, or the Jets win.
- Chicago Bears losing to the Colts in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl XXIII Recap: San Francisco 49ers defeated Cincinnati Bengals 20-16.
1990: Wilson Phillips
24 of 44As I watched this music video for the top song of 1990, there were too many things going through my mind I must prevent myself from writing.
All I know is, three is always better than two.
Super Bowl XXIV Recap: San Francisco 49ers convincingly defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10.
1991: Bryan Adams
25 of 44Bryan Adams captured woman's hearts everywhere in his 1991 hit "Everything I Do, I Do it For You."
Adams song was featured in Kevin Costner's film, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."
Do you think I can't make another correlation with Costner and Adams?
Well, place your bets and here we go.
Kevin Costner was in "The Bodyguard" with Robert L. Feist, who was in "Pink Cadillac", with Bryan Adams.
Hold the applause.
Super Bowl XV Recap: New York Giants barely get by the Buffalo Bills 20-19. To many Bills fans, this game will forever be known as the "Wide Right Game."
1992: Boyz II Men
26 of 44The moment Boyz II Men opened their mouths, a woman's hearts would melt instantly.
They were the group known as being suave and smooth. They knew what was required to be romantic.
Trust me. Pop in Boyz II Men one evening with your lady, light some candles, and you will be writing "thank you" letters to the Boyz of romance for years.
Super Bowl XXVI Recap: Washington Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-24.
1993: Whitney Houston
27 of 44Before her downfall, Whitney Houston was at the top of her game such as her classic hit, "I Will Always Love You."
In Super Bowl XXVII, the Buffalo Bills made not only their second, but their third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. The Bills fans finally realized that their team will not always love them as they were defeated in the Super Bowl yet again against the Dallas Cowboys 52-17.
1994: Ace Of Base
28 of 44Ace of Base 1994 hit "The Sign" was the number one song of that year and it was the same year that Bills fans say a sign that read, "Football God's Hate You."
The Bills returned to the Super Bowl for the fourth consecutive season and for the second year in a row against the Dallas Cowboys. Yet again, all signs were pointing in the other direction as the Cowboys were crowned once again with a final score of 30-13.
1995: Coolio
29 of 44We all want to know what it is like to live in a "gangsta's paradise."
Can you imagine having all of that money and power?
Well, ,word to wise, in the movie Scarface, Tony Montana learned the hard way and Spider-Man eventually had to learn with "great power comes great responsibility."
Super Bowl XIX Recap: San Francisco 49ers defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26.
1996: Los Del Rio
30 of 44Ah, yes, the most annoying song ever created on the history of Earth was the top song in a dreadful year of 1996. The "Macarena" was introduced to the U.S. and Americans everywhere tried their unsuccessful attempts in dancing the ever so simple moves for the "Macarena."
Macarena is an area in Seville, Spain and it can mean "Mother of God."
It's kind of funny that's what the title of the song means. I remember finding myself saying repeatedly to myself, "Mother of God," when I first heard this trash.
Super Bowl XXX Recap: Dallas Cowboys defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-17.
1997: Elton John
31 of 44After the shocking and sudden death of Princess Diane, Elton John brought his genius, song-writing skills to work as he performed his emotional song, "Candles in the Wind" at her funeral.
In a moment where emotions where at the highest, this is a pure masterpiece for a woman who was loved by many.
Super Bowl XXXI Recap: Green Bay Packers defeated the New England Patriots 35-21.
1998: Next
32 of 44In what is probably the most creative ways in discussing sexual innuendos, Next's "Too Close" should have been number one for a long time.
If you listen to the song closely, you can understand what the true attentions are in this song. It would be the first time in male history where a man could turn on this song in front of a room, and he could express what he is actually thinking in his head without fear of being slapped by the woman due to the fact that the woman would not completely understand what the song is trying to explain.
In conclusion, the song is basically saying, "I want you and that is about as far as we are going to go".
Super Bowl XXXII Recap: Denver Broncos defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-14.
1999: Cher
33 of 44Do you believe in love after love?
No, Cher I do not.
Not a big fan of Cher, but she earned the top song of 1999.
I could actually think of a song in 1999 that was better like Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca."
Sorry to all Cher fans out there, but I always found her music to be boring and I felt dirty after listening to her music.
Anyways, Super Bowl XXXIII would be most memorable for John Elway riding out in the sunset with a Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons 34-19.
2000: Faith
34 of 44Faith Hill.
She is the reason why I started to love football.
Not only is she hot, but she has an awesome voice, too.
When I was not an avid football fan when I was younger, Faith Hill's opening song before Sunday Night Football reeled me in. It was her voice, but mostly her body, that kept me coming back anxious for some more Sunday nights.
And she was right. I was waiting "all day for a Sunday Night."
Super Bowl XXXVI Recap: St. Louis Rams defeated Tennessee Titans 23-16.
2001:Lifehouse
35 of 44Lifehouse are still riding the wave of their 2001 hit, "Hanging by A Moment", which was the number one song of that year.
Many musicians are plagued by one-hit wonders as they can never amass the same success they achieved by the one song that made them famous. These musicians are "hanging by a moment" which left them at top, but they can not let go of that moment because that is all they have.
Below are a couple of one-hit sports wonders who are still "hanging by a moment" to keep their legacy alive.
- Paul Abbott
- Anthony Mason
- Scott Mitchell
- Pete Schourek
- Brady Anderson
- David Tyree
- Don Larsen
- Lamont Jordan
- Derek Anderson
Super Bowl XXXV: Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants 34-7.
2002: Nickelback
36 of 44In 2002, it was the year Tom Brady's reign of terror would begin.
And so would the sound of Nickelback hitting the airwaves.
Simultaneously, they both started a heavy following of people who hate them.
Many thought Nickelback would fade away and same with Tom Brady, but they both will not go away.
Tom Brady and Company shocked the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI with a final score of 20-17.
2003: 50 Cent
37 of 44Can you believe 50 Cent beat out R. Kelly, Sean Paul, and Beyonce for the number one song in 2003?
Neither can I, but some people love his work.
I do not really understand why besides the obvious club vibe he brings to his music.
But, he absolutely does not sing about anything in his music.
It is either about sex, drugs, or alcohol.
At least he knows how to market himself because sex and alcohol does sell. And people do sell drugs.
Super Bowl XXXVII Recap: Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Oakland Raiders 48-21.
2004: Usher
38 of 44How many different ways can we respond to someone when we are asked a question and our response has to be, "Yes"?
Answers are below:
- Yeah
- OK
- Alright
- Affirmative
- Si
- Aye
- Fine
- Certainty
- Surely
- Sure thing
- I guess
- Very well
- Yep
- (Head nod)
- Most assuredly
- Right away.
- By all means
- Gladly
- Good
- Granted
If I miss any, please let me know.
Super Bowl XXXVIII Recap: New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers 32-29.
2005: Mariah Carey
39 of 44(Excessive drooling and silence)
I'm sorry. I was detracted by the gorgeous Mariah Carey.
I will try my best to recap the Super Bowl in 2005 to my best capabilities without having Mariah Carey on my mind.
In Super Boobs XXXIX, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots squared off.
Side-Track Train: I never really understood the meaning squared off in reference to sports because you can't really square off in a sport unless you have squares. You know what isn't square shaped, Mariah Carey's body.
Back on Track: Terrell Owens made a miraculous comeback from a broken leg, but not even his own performance could prevent the Eagles from making so many mistakes.
Side-Track Train: You know how many times I have watched Mariah Carey's music video? I am on my twenty sixth time during the time I wrote this section. I should have been done with this part hours ago, but each viewing gets better and better.
Back on Track: The Eagles Donovan McNabb ended up throwing three interceptions and the Patriots went on to win it for the second straight year in a row.
Side-Track Train: I had a very inappropriate joke involving what is "straight", but I will leave that to the viewers.
2006: Daniel Powter
40 of 44The Seattle Seahawks and their fans can relate to a "bad day" in Super Bowl XL against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
There were two terrible calls in the fourth quarter that lead to the demise of the Seahawks.
In the fourth quarter, Seahawks tackle Sean Locklear was called for holding after a passing play that would have put the Seahawks at the Steelers one yard line. If this would have occurred, the Seahawks could have had a shot at tying the game. The next play, Hasselbeck threw an interception. He was called for a penalty for a low block, which did not make any sense as the play ended with Hasselbeck tacking Ike Taylor on the return.
The penalty placed the Steelers on the 44, which helped the Steelers seal the door with another touchdown.
The final score was 21-10.
Seahawks coach was so angry, two days later when he spoke to the media, he exclaimed, "I knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts, as well."
In 2010, Bill Leavy, the referee who made the calls against the Seahawks, discussed how he regrets calling those penalties and he felt he made a huge mistake.
Ouch. Bad day.
2007: Beyonce
41 of 44In Super Bowl XLI, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17.
Peyton Manning would win the MVP honors.
It seems Peyton Manning is one of those players that are "irreplaceable" if he were to finally decide to hang it up.
Cleveland Cavaliers had to learn it to the hard way that life without Lebron was not going to be easy.
Here is a quick list of current players who are "irreplaceable" for their team.
- Lebron James
- Albert Pujols
- Kobe Bryant
- Derrick Rose
- Amare Stoudemire
- Kemba Walker
- Jimmer Fredette
- Chris Johnson
- Carmelo Anthony
- Blake Griffin
- Sidney Crosby
- Tom Brady
- Kevin Durant
I'm sure there are more. But, here is a list of players who can easily be replaced.
- Tiger Woods
- Derek Jeter
- Chris Bosh
- Brett Favre
- Albert Haynesworth
- Allen Iverson
- Tracy McGrady
- Chad OchoCinco
- Mark Sanchez
Again, there are plenty of more people I can possibly fit on this list.
2008: Flo Rida 'Low
42 of 44Super Bowl XLLII was between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.
Two words: David Tyree.
2009: The Black Eyed Peas
43 of 44The performers for this years half-time show at the Super Bowl belongs to the same band with the number one song of 2009, the Black Eyed Peas.
Personally, I can not wait!
With a half-time show running thirty minutes, I am really excited for the Black Eyed Peas to perform.
It will be the perfect time for me to re-stock on food, drinks, catch up on reading, homework, chores, going to the bathroom, taking the dog for a walk, learning a new language, trying out a new recipe and most importantly, sleeping.
I can't wait.
Super Bowl XLIII Recap: In what was one of the most memorable finishes in Super Bowl history, the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 31-17.
2010: Ke$ha
44 of 44Don't ask me why America made this song the top song of 2010.
Also, don't ask me "who dat" when you see the name Ke$ha or please do not ask me why she has the dollar sign in her name.
But, we all got behind her, like we did when we rooted for the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV when they defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17.
