New York Giants' Safety Antrel Rolle's Comments Should Get Him Out Of Town

Leslie MonteiroJan 19, 2011

For a guy who accomplished nothing as a Giant this year, Antrel Rolle has a lot to say.

Yesterday Rolle suggested to WQAM’s Sid Rosenberg that Tom Coughlin should be like Rex Ryan. He yearned for Coughlin to be loose and fun-loving.

He cited his coach’s personality as a reason the Giants underachieved down the stretch.

Coughlin has to go. The team collapsed often under his watch. This is the second straight year the Giants collapsed, and in 2009, the Giants lost all of their mojo that helped them lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional playoffs.

The players stopped listening to the coach, which is another reason he should be fired.

But blaming Coughlin is convenient. It comes off as a crutch for players' shortcomings.

The players were no better than their coach. They should take accountability for the team falling apart every year. Even if Coughlin is gone, what’s the guarantee it’s going to get better if the guys can’t play well?

It's not right for Rolle to rip Coughlin; he was a bust this year, himself.

If Justin Tuck or Eli Manning rip the coach, that’s one thing. It’s another for a newcomer to go say whatever he wants, when he hasn’t earned any credibility.

Tuck called out Rolle when he heard the comments. He plans to meet with him.

Good for Tuck. It’s about time someone stepped up on Coughlin’s behalf.

For Rolle to say Coughlin has to be like Ryan is silly. Coaches cannot change personalities. If they do that, they would be viewed as frauds and disingenuous.

Having a happy-go-lucky personality is not easy as one thinks. A person has to be born with it. For Coughlin to all of sudden at an old age, that’s not happening. It’s unfair to have an old man to change.

Coughlin’s personality is not an issue. His issue should be about competency. Outside of that fluke run in the 2008 postseason, he does not strike anyone as a great coach; he is a mediocre coach at best.

Folks have made a big deal about Ryan’s bigger-than-life personality. They love his charming manner. That’s all well and good, but if Ryan was not backing it up, he would be a fool.

In fact, critics in town mocked Ryan often during the tough times. They suggested he stopp talking and focus on coaching. They got tired of his unwavering faith.

Ryan is winning now. He has taken his team to the AFC Championship Game for the second straight year. It’s easy to like him. And let’s remember something. It isn’t his charm that is helping the Jets win. It’s his ability to coach that is making him look good.

Ryan has a good knack for using his players. He knows how to put them in a position to succeed. His faith in LaDainian Tomlinson paid off after folks suggested he did not use his running back anymore. Tomlinson has played in the playoffs so far.

The Jets head coach is getting results from old players and role players on defense.

He knows how to make adjustments. He comes up with brilliant game plans often.

Most importantly, his team never chokes unlike Coughlin’s.

If the Jets choked the last two years, he would be out of a job by now. People love him  because he is winning. Let’s not get carried away about his press conferences.

Rolle should just be quiet and worry about getting better next year. This is a guy that constantly made excuses all season.

Rolle has not done much to earn his pay this year. He did not tackle or cover well. He looked slow in pursuit of wide receivers.

Teams did not hesitate passing at Rolle’s direction, and that’s for good reason.

You wonder if he was afraid of contact this year. He did not enjoy being hit often and he would try to do everything he could to avoid getting hurt.

It’s hard for him to get credibility with that passive approach.

Some of the Giants grew tired of him late in the year. Fans didn’t seem happy either.

Rolle might be a great soundbite, but it’s meaningless if he can’t back it up. That seems to be the case here.

Ryan and his team can talk and get away with it. The Jets are winning. They earned the benefit of doubt.

When Rolle plays well along with his team, they both get the benefit of the doubt.

There’s no place for any Giants to say anything at this point.

Rolle better hope he does not become expendable this offseason. The Giants can release him this offseason.

At this point, releasing the mouthy player wouldn't be a bad idea.

The Giants should make an example of not tolerate underachievers by releasing Rolle.
