Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga Fight Reunites Promoters Bob Arum and Don King

Leo ReyesJan 14, 2011

The upcoming fight between Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico and Ricardo Mayorga of Managua, Nicaragua on March 12th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, could galvanize the reunification of two of the world's greatest boxing promoters.

Bob Arum and Don King are scheduled to meet on January 19th, when they hold a news conference at 11 am at BB King's Blues Club and Grille, Times Square, New York City, Fanhouse reports.

The press conference will highlight the battle of two great boxers in a major boxing event in the first quarter of the year.

Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs), who is the current WBA light middleweight champion, has lost only twice in his professional boxing career.

His first loss was against Antonio Margarito during their bloody fight in 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto failed to defend his WBA welterweight title after losing via TKO in the eleventh round.

Cotto's second loss was against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao on the same venue in 2009, also via TKO in the twelfth and final round.

Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 knockouts) is the former WBA/WBC Welterweight champion and the former WBC Junior Middleweight champion. He holds a record of 29-7 with 23 knockouts, along with one draw and a no contest.

Mayorga is fresh from his win over Michael Walker in the ninth round at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida. It was Mayorga's first fight in two years.

"I think that with two, old codgers like Don King and myself working together on a promotion will sort of be like the fountain for both of us, and that we'll resort to the shenanigans that we had with each other so many years ago, and I'm looking forward to it," said Arum.

"You know, in recognition of our ages, we're not going to be as vitriolic, I don't think, or as crazy as we were in the past. We had a lot of things that happened, and it's going to be interesting," said Arum.

"People are going to learn what it is for a card to be put on by two promoters who are real pros."

Arum and King have jointly promoted major boxing fights in the past decades including, among others the fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frasier in Manila, Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad and Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather versus Zab Judah.

The reunification of the world's top boxing promoters may lead to a possible resumption of negotiations for the twice-failed Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

Last year, Floyd Mayweather Jr met on several occasions with Don King in Florida reportedly to look at the possibility of Don King Promotions acting as his promoter for the planned fight with Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao.

Arum believes that he and King could make the mega bout between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao happen in relatively no time—this after the twice-failed negotiations between Arum and Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions could not make the clash come to fruition.

"You know, we'd have a really basic negotiation. We'd yell and scream at each other," said Arum. "But, you know, King says that it would take two hours, and I would say over a weekend. But I would say that over that weekend, that Don King and I would come to terms."

The March 12th junior middleweight fight featuring Arum's WBA titlist Miguel Cotto and Don King's Ricardo Mayorga will be available on pay-per-view under Showtime.
