Cam Newton Declares for 2011 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins Next Destination?

Old AccountJan 13, 2011

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton made the decision that has been expected since early in the college football season by declaring for the 2011 NFL Draft.

This year's Heisman winner enters the draft with a lot of questions about his overall draft position.

Most draft experts label Newton as a project in the making in this year's draft. His decision-making and accuracy as a quarterback makes it unlikely for him to be successful early on in his NFL career.

However, nobody can question the physical tools of Newton, which should bring plenty of interest among a lot of teams as well.

With the college football season ending, the 2011 NFL Draft is in full force. One of the many questions we will hear in upcoming mock drafts is what team will take the gamble of drafting Newton in the first round?

Despite the criticism of his transition to the pros early on, the potential of Cam Newton will be too much for all 32 teams to pass up.

The Denver Broncos took the risk of drafting Tim Tebow in the first round, despite him being labeled as a project for a few seasons. Newton should be no different.

Who could be a team interested in Newton's services? The Washington Redskins. This has been a recent trend involving the 2011 NFL Draft. The Donovan McNabb era is likely over in Washington, and a new heir to the franchise is needed.

Mike Shanahan likes to develop quarterbacks who have rare physical skills, and Newton could flourish into a great quarterback some day under their system.

Another team that could possibly show interest is the Seattle Seahawks. Matt Hasselbeck doesn't have many years left as an NFL quarterback, and Newton could be a late first-round pick that could flourish under Pete Carroll's system (he loves to have great athletes).

Let the speculation of Cam Newton's future officially begin, as he is now a member of the 2011 NFL draft class.
