NFL Rumors: 10 Teams That Could Use Nnamdi Asomugha
Nnamdi Asomugha, cornerback extraordinaire, will be hitting the free agent market this offseason.
Asomugha is just as good, if not better than Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets.
But, playing in Oakland with a name that's really hard to pronounce, Asomugha doesn't get much media attention.
He also doesn't put up very big numbers, but that's because every quarterback in the league is afraid to throw it to his side of the field.
That leads to low interception totals, a low number of passes defensed and not a lot of forced fumbles.
But, that doesn't mean he's not one of the best corners in the NFL.
With that being said, let's take a look at 10 teams that could use the shutdown cornerback.
10. Tennessee Titans
1 of 10
The Titans could use a quiet cornerback to line up alongside the loud-mouthed Cortland Finnegan.
Even though their styles are different in almost every way, Finnegan and Asomugha would be one of the best corner tandems in the league.
9. Chicago Bears
2 of 10
The Bears' defense is solid. They are one of the best units in the league.
But, if there is one concern on the defense, it's the cornerback position.
They don't have a lot of depth behind Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman, so Asomugha would definitely fit right into the Bears' scheme.
8. Seattle Seahawks
3 of 10
The Seahawks' pass defense is the weakest part of their team.
Though they only went 7-9 this season, they somehow made the playoffs in the weak NFC West.
If they can sign Asomugha, they might be able to keep winning division titles over the next few years (with more than seven wins hopefully).
7. Denver Broncos
4 of 10
The Broncos are probably going to lose Champ Bailey to free agency.
But, if they can somehow sign Asomugha, maybe they can resign Bailey.
That would give the Broncos a veteran secondary that could cover for some of the shortcomings of the front seven.
6. Houston Texans
5 of 10
The Texans had the worst pass defense in the NFL this season, so it's a no-brainer that they could use a guy like Asomugha.
But, the Texans' defense is so bad that throwing a bunch of money at Asomugha wouldn't make things a whole lot better in Houston.
It certainly wouldn't hurt though.
5. Dallas Cowboys
6 of 10
The Cowboys also need an upgrade in the secondary.
But, though they could use an upgrade at corner, their biggest problem lies at the safety positions.
They should spend their money to bring in a big name safety instead.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
7 of 10
Outside of Ike Taylor, the Steelers have a problem at cornerback.
That's the one weak spot of Pittsburgh's ferocious D.
Signing Asomugha would make them the best overall defense in the NFL for years to come.
3. New England Patriots
8 of 10
The Pats have a promising young cornerback in Devin McCourty.
Now, they just need someone who they can line up alongside him.
Asomugha would help the Patriots improve on their 30th-ranked pass defense.
2. Washington Redskins
9 of 10
As always, if there is a big name free agent on the market, Dan Snyder and the Redskins will be involved.
After signing DeAngelo Hall last offseason, the Redskins' defense took a major step back under Mike Shannahan.
With the 31st-ranked pass defense, Washington should be major players in the race for Asomugha.
1. Baltimore Ravens
10 of 10
Asomugha needs to be on the Ravens.
He just seems like the sort of player that would benefit even more from lining up with Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Haoli Ngata and Terrell Suggs.
Signing a cornerback like Asomugha would be enough to let the Ravens leapfrog the Steelers for the title of "Best Defense in the NFL."
