Manny Pacquiao: 10 Men He Should Have Fought Instead of Shane Mosley

Allen KimDec 28, 2010

Manny Pacquiao is facing off against Shane Mosley in a bout that no one really wants to see.

Mosley may garner a lot of attention on name recognition alone, but he is an aging fighter that is way past his prime.

Mosley was destroyed by Floyd Mayweather and struggled to fight to a draw against Sergio Mora. He is past his prime and his star is fading fast.

This was clearly a money grab on behalf of Top Rank's Bob Arum and he should be ashamed of setting up what is likely to be a lopsided beat down of Mosley at the hands of Pacquiao.

So, of all the fighters out there, who would make for a more challenging and entertaining fight against Pacquiao?

10. Jan Zaveck

1 of 10

If you ask a boxing fan who Jan Zaveck is, you'll most likely get a puzzled look from them.

This Slovenian fighter is virtually unknown, but he's the IBF Welterweight Champion.

Zaveck has a 30-1-1 record, with 17 victories coming by knockout.

9. Sebastian Zbik

2 of 10

Sebastian Zbik hails from Germany.

He has an undefeated record at 30-0 and he would pose some problems for Manny Pacquiao in the size department.

The two would clearly have to meet at a catch weight, but it could be a more interesting challenge for Pacquiao.

Zbik is one of the top contenders to challenge Sergio Martinez right now and he's certainly no slouch.

8. Sergei Dzinziruk

3 of 10

Sergei Dzinziruk hails from Ukraine. He's a widely unknown fighter, possibly because his last name looks so tough to pronounce.

However, Dzinziruk has an undefeated 36-0 record and he's one of the next contenders to fight Sergio Martinez.

As a junior middleweight, he can easily drop down to meet the weight requirements for a potential Pacquiao fight.

7. Amir Khan

Amir Khan actually trains with Pacquiao on occasion and he too is trained by Freddie Roach. That pretty much makes the chances of a bout between the two fighters very slim, but we can always wish for a better opponent than Mosley.

Khan showed the world that he doesn't have a glass jaw and that he can withstand some big hits against Maidana.

He is fast and has good footwork and he'd make for a more interesting bout.

6. Timothy Bradley, Jr.

Timothy Bradley is fighting in January against Devon Alexander, but he'd be a much better matchup against Manny Pacquiao than Shane Mosley.

Bradley is undefeated at 26-0 and he's at the top of the Junior Welterweight division.

He shouldn't have much trouble making weight against Pacquiao and he would pose a bigger challenge to the pound-for-pound king.

5. Andre Berto

Andre Berto is far from being a household name despite his unblemished record.

Berto has had little to no competition throughout his career, but it's hard to blame him for the gaffes of his promoter.

Berto is young, he's fast, he has a title and he a surprising amount of power. He makes a lot of sense as Pacquiao's next opponent, but Bob Arum is only in it for the money and Berto cannot deliver on that front.

If Berto didn't withdraw from his matchup against Mosley, he could very well have been Pacquiao's next opponent.

4. Paul Williams

Despite Paul Williams getting his bell rung in the undisputed knockout of the year by Sergio Martinez, he's still one of the toughest matchups for any fighter.

Williams has a huge height and reach advantage and he poses as a nightmare matchup for any fighter.

Williams reputation took a serious hit after getting knocked out, but I could easily see him upsetting Pacquiao in a fight.

3. Juan Manuel Marquez

8 of 10

There are plenty of fans that would like to see a final bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.

The two fought to a draw in the first fight and Pacquiao won by decision in the second meeting. They were both terrific fights with controversial outcomes.

Marquez is far from being reserved regarding his desire to fight Pacquiao. He continues to insist that he won both fights and that he would like a chance to prove that he can beat him.

I believe that at this point in their careers, Pacquiao has surpassed Marquez by a wide margin, but they could still make for an entertaining fight.

2. Sergio Martinez

Sergio Martinez is Fighter of the Year for 2010 and he's coming off a brutal knockout of Paul Williams.

The problem with pairing him against Manny Pacquiao would be the catch weight. Pacquiao will not move up, and while Martinez could move down, it makes for a tenuous situation.

However, I might actually favor Martinez in this bout. He's naturally a bigger fighter and he has the hand speed to nearly match up with Pacquiao.

Martinez may be the most dangerous fighter not named Floyd Mayweather to challenge Pacquiao.

1. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Did you really think he wouldn't be the No. 1 opponent listed here?

This is a dream fight for boxing fans and the potential matchup between the two will dog each fighter until they either get in the ring, or one of them retires for good.

While this seems more like a hopeless cause at this point, we can always dream...
