Boxing Fans Choice for 2011: Pacquiao vs. Mosley or Mayweather vs. Nevada Courts
Boxing fans from around the world are complaining about the upcoming fight between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and aging Shane Mosley.
They are of the opinion the match is tilted in favor of Pacquiao, who at 32 is undoubtedly in his prime while Mosley, as everyone knows, is past his prime and about to begin life at 40.
The boxing fight the world wants to see, otherwise known as the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight, is most likely doomed to uncertainty. Boxing observers predict it is not certain the most-talked about fight will happen in 2011.
Legal personalities who are also avid boxing fans say Mayweather will most likely spend time in jail for a series of criminal offenses involving domestic violence and physical assault.
These legal minds remind us of of the O.J. Simpson case, where the famous footballer is spending 33 years in jail, not for murder as he was originally charged but for robbery in Las Vegas.
They fear Mayweather could suffer the same fate, knowing Nevada's tough laws and dedicated criminal courts.
To some boxing fans, 2011 is a bad year for boxing, as their hopes for a final encounter between Pacquiao and Mayweather is slowly fading with the grim possibility of the undefeated American boxer getting or spending time in jail.
Against this backdrop, what are boxing fan's options?
It is of course much better to watch the unpopular Pacquiao-Mosley fight than to see Floyd Mayweather spending time jail.
But, what makes the upcoming Pacquiao-Mosley match unpopular contrary to what Bob Arum claims the fight is going to be a hit, owing to Mosley's crowd-drawing ability to lure real boxing fans especially in the state of California where he spent his best years?
Boxing fans claim Mosley is past his prime, as one can glean from his clash with Mayweather in May and his recent bout with Sergio Mora.
Mosley lost to Mayweather via a unanimous decision in what some boxing fans claim the fight may have been fixed. Mayweather was in serious trouble when Mosley twice buckled Mayweather's knees with powerful rights, and pinned him to the ropes with a series of body blows.
Almost eight months after the Mosley-Mayweather fight, a good number boxing fans could still not believe Mosley lost steam in the second round when he was never hit by Mayweather in round one.
They maintain Mosley was in a very good position to finish Mayweather in the second round, but he opted not to follow up on his offense for reasons unknown to boxing fans.
Mosley's recent fight with Sergio Mora leaves much to be desired. Boxing fans say it was the most boring fight they have even seen.
On the other hand, Pacquiao is coming off two successive victories this year over Ghana's Joshua Clottey and Mexico's Antonio Margarito.
While the Pacquiao-Mosley fight is yet to be promoted, odds are reportedly placed at 7-1 in favor of Manny Pacquiao.
Oddsmakers should not be blamed for the initial Pacquiao headway, as Mosley's lackluster performance against Mora is still fresh in their mind.
Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said the Pacquiao-Mosley fight is right choice, citing Mosley's wins over great names in boxing including his dominance over Oscar de la Hoya, Antonio Margarito and Ricardo Mayorga, among others.
Arum blamed Juan Manuel Marquez for not being chosen, as he has overpriced himself by asking twice the amount he was paid on his recent fight with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
The proposed Pacquiao-Berto fight is not commercially viable, according to Arum as the Haitian-American boxer has not reached a level of popularity that will generate enough pay-per-view subscriptions.
So, what is your choice for 2011? Would it be Manny Pacquiao vs.Shane Mosley or Floyd Mayweather, Jr vs. Nevada Courts?
