Best and Worst Christmas Themed Outfits In Sports

Thomas CopainDec 22, 2010

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Yes that's the beginning of a holiday classic made famous by Johnny Mathis. But other than the changing weather and the carols in the air, you can tell its the holiday season when teams across the world start breaking out the holiday jerseys.

Usually they're all pretty standard and have some element/combination of red, green, snow and possibly ornaments in them. But there are some that do stand out above the others, for both good and bad reasons.

So with that in mind, here are some of the best and worst holiday jerseys.

Worst No. 5: Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

1 of 10

By holiday jersey standards, this Penguins jersey is actually pretty tame. It works, too, blending in the color scheme from the jerseys of the parent Pittsburgh Penguins' first jersey.

But, the giant snowflake in the middle, along with the Santa hat, make this jersey too busy.

There's been worse, but there's been better, too.

Worst No. 4: Adirondack IceHawks

2 of 10

Like this uniform for example, from the Adirondack IceHawks. Obviously, any holiday jersey will not be menacing, regardless of what the mascot is. So, the IceHawks get some kudos for getting the mascot to look somewhat intimidating by snapping the candy cane. But when the rest of the jersey looks like a stocking or wrapping paper, that it gets lost.

Worst No. 3: Richmond Renegades

3 of 10

The Richmond Renegades, who were part of the ECHL, bring us this. Whatever it is.

The snowflake looks like something out of the Montreal Olympic Village or the old Canada jerseys from the '87 Canada Cup, while the rest of the jersey looks like a mid-'90s 7-up bottle. Whoa boy.

Worst No. 2: Hershey Bears

4 of 10

Then there's the Hershey Bears, the dominant franchise of the AHL, who bring us this. I'm guessing this is a holiday jersey, since it has the Christmas ornaments along with wind swirls, boughs of holly on the arms and a navy blue background with 'Bears' written in red and gold.

I think right now it's a good time to add that the Bears' colors are brown and black.

It's an interesting ensemble, to say the least.

Worst No. 1: Florida Everblades

5 of 10

Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo! Sports asked if this was the worst holiday jersey of all time. I'm inclined to say yes, after this monstrosity came out recently.

It's lime green with palm trees, candy canes, matching socks and of course the staple of holiday jerseys, the boughs of holly on the arms. It is atrocious, to say the least, and even the jersey could be forgiven if it was even the right shade of green.

It is to holiday jerseys what the Ducks' Flying Wild Wing and the Lightning Perfect Storm were to third jerseys in the '90s.

Best No. 5: Calgary Hitmen

The Hitmen of the CHL's Western Hockey League already have a pretty solid uniform set and colors, but the holiday jersey they wear every year is easily one of the best. Why? Because the Hitmen used the jersey strategy of "Less Is More".

A very simple addition of a Santa hat on the Hitmen logo, plus the effect of snow sitting on top of the numbering makes a very simple, yet very clean look that doesn't diverge much from the Hitmen's normal unis. It's also very special since the jerseys are worn during the annual Teddy Bear Toss game, where fans throw teddy bears onto the ice after the first goal to be donated.

Best No. 4: Binghamton Senators

7 of 10

It's not the most stylish holiday uniform, but it gains points for memorializing one of the most famous fake holidays in modern history. First found by Yahoo!, the Binghamton Senators honored the classic "Festivus" from Seinfeld with this jersey, complete with aluminum pole (because tinsel is distracting).

The back is a little garish, but the pole is a nice touch on the jersey. Plus, no one's family will be driven out of Bayside for wearing it.

Best No. 3: Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Supersonics

8 of 10

It's not a special jersey, but the Blazers have worn their red alternate jerseys at home the last couple of times they played on Christmas. I bring up a game a couple of years ago on Christmas against Seattle, where the Sonics wore their road green, creating a very festive, if not somewhat distracting, matchup.

I always liked the red Blazers' jerseys, and combining for the red-and-green ensemble on Christmas is an interesting choice, ergo their inclusion on this list.

Best No. 2: Minnesota Wild

9 of 10
ST PAUL, MN - OCTOBER 14: Mikko Koivu #9 of the Minnesota Wild celebrates with teammates on the bench a goal scored by Matt Cullen #7 in the third period during their game against the Edmonton Oilers on October 14, 2010 at Xcel Energy Center in St Paul, M

Somewhat of a cop-out since this uniform is the Wild's primary home jersey. But it's still very attractive and still very christmas-y for a team's main uniform set. I've always thought the Wild had one of the better logo's and sweaters in the league since their inception 10 years ago. And this jersey is definitely not a letdown.

Best No. 1: New Jersey Devils

C'mon, how can you see those jerseys and not think Christmas?

Of course, most hockey people know these aren't holiday jerseys, but rather a throwback from the 1980s, when the Devils wore these jerseys. I always thought the red and black were a nice touch, considering the team is called the Devils. But how can you not like those. They look phenomenal. I can definitely see why some fans want these jerseys back.
