Heavyweight Prospect Tyson Fury Victorious in Pascal-Hopkins Undercard

Laz IzadaDec 19, 2010

Last night on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec, in the main event, Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal battled to a draw.

On the non-televised undercard was the debut of English Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury (13-0, nine KOs) in North America. Along with new trainer Emanuel Steward, he was taking on veteran game American Heavyweight Zack Page (21-33, seven KOs).

Fury, from Manchester, England, is a raging sensation in Great Britain and only 22 years old. He stands at a mesmerizing 6'9", weighing 268.5 pounds.

He has been active this year fighting four times. His last bout was a unanimous points decision win over Rich Power (12-1) on Sept. 10 in England.

That match up was his premiere United States television appearance that was shown on Showtime's SHO-BOX The Next Generation, a show featuring future prospects.

This past Saturday night, he took on 37-year-old veteran Zach Page.

Page, who seems to be used as the measuring stone for up and coming heavyweight prospects, has fought eight times this year with two decision victories against Mike Tyson, claim to fame opponent Keven McBride and German prospect Sebastian Koeber, who was an undefeated 19-0 at the time.

His five defeats this year have come by decision to prospects and veterans Derric Rossy, Yoan Pablo Hernandez, Juan Carlos Gomez, Manual Charr and a TKO loss to recent Cuban prospect from Miami Luis Ortiz.

Fury (along with former Lennox Lewis and current Wladimir Klitschko trainer Emanuel Steward) defeated Page by unanimous decision with scores of 80-72 by all three judges.

He was not able to knockout Page, as the majority of prospects that face him fail to the same predicament. Page has only been stopped three times in his last 32 previous defeats.

This fight made two things clear for Fury and Steward: That they can continue progressing to better fights and more U.S. television exposure in the future, and that they must work on Fury's knockout power.

Knockouts are what the fans want and will bring the attractive fights and the money.
