Tarvaris Jackson Headed To IR, Minnesota Vikings QB Situation In Question

David KindervaterDec 16, 2010

After just one game as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings this season, Tarvaris Jackson has been placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Jackson was diagnosed with turf toe following last week's 21-3 loss to the NY Giants and three days later, his season is over following a disappointing outing that officially knocked the Vikings out of playoff contention.

As a free agent at season's end, Jackson's future with the team is now also in serious jeopardy.

As for quarterback Brett Favre, his other-worldly consecutive game streak was halted at 297 in the aforementioned loss to the Giants. But the condition of his ailing shoulder hasn't improved enough to determine whether he will be available to play against the Chicago Bears this Monday night.

Thus, enter third-string QB Joe Webb and recently signed veteran Patrick Ramsey. Webb will get the nod as long as he is physically able to play, but if Webb and Favre are unable to go, the Vikings will turn to newcomer Ramsey who was just introduced to his new team today.

No matter how you slice this situation, the Vikings are hurting at the most important position on the team.

Webb has had limited reps as the team's quarterback, but he does bring a special set of skills to the field that the Vikings coaching staff will undoubtedly want to highlight. Plus, at least he's been with the team throughout the season. He knows the offensive terminology and, well—he knows the playbook.

Ramsey would be about as effective as one would expect an emergency quarterback to be.

With a new stadium and 50th anniversary celebration playing a part in Monday night's festivities, the quarterback quandary only adds to what should be a very interesting evening.
