McIntyre on the Wallace Watch

Paul McGuillicuddyDec 27, 2007

Webster Yankee alum, Joe McIntyre, has earned a nomination on the Wallace Award watch list for the upcoming college baseball season. The prestigious award is given annually to the nation’s best college baseball player.

McIntyre led the NYCBL with a .409 batting average. The All-NYCBL first-team selection also led the league with 65 hits, 16 doubles, and 89 total bases.

The Fuquay Varina native strung together five consecutive multi-hit games as he earned back-to-back league Offensive Player of the Week honors. In total, McIntyre had 21 multi-hit games over the 42 game season.

McIntyre led Webster with four-hit games each against Hornell on July 24 and then against Brockport four days later. The first baseman finished with two home runs, 65 RBI, 16 walks, and an on-base percentage of .472.

He led the North Carolina A&T Aggies with 65 RBI last spring. He finished second on the team with a .342 batting average to earn his second All-MEAC Team selection. In 2006 McIntyre was selected MEAC Tournament MVP.

Seven other NYCBL alum dot the Wallace Watch:

Chris Dove (Saratoga ‘06/ Elon), John Allman (Amsterdam ‘04/ Kansas), Tim Alberts (Geneva ‘06/ Niagara), Jake Owens (Glens Falls ‘07/ Northwestern), Mark Kelly (Glens Falls ‘07/ Southern Illinois), Sean Barksdale (Allegany County ‘07/ Temple), and Ollie Linton (Little Falls ‘06/ UC-Irvine).

The Brooks Wallace Award is dedicated to the memory of the former Texas Tech shortstop and coach who died at the age of 27 after a long battle with cancer. Wallace was a four-year starter at Tech, and he earned All-Conference and All-District Six honors his senior year. After spending two years in the Texas Rangers’ organization, Wallace returned to Lubbock first as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach.

Past recipients of the Wallace Award include David Price (Vanderbilt ’07), Brad Lincoln (Houston ’06), Alex Gordon (Nebraska ’05), and Kurt Suzuki (Cal State Fullerton ’04).

Price was the first player selected in last year’s draft and is currently in the Rays’ organization. Lincoln plays in the Pirates’ farm system. Gordon is with the Kansas City Royals, and Suzuki catches for the Oakland A’s.

The 2008 award banquet will take place July 3rd on the Texas Tech campus.
