WWE TLC Results: Top 20 Table, Ladder or Chair Matches of All-Time

Robert AitkenDec 20, 2010

The abbreviation "TLC" may stand for a TV channel or the phrase "tender loving care," but on Sunday, the letters stood for three things in the wrestling world: tables, ladders and chairs.

As we reflect upon the second-ever installment of the themed pay-per-view, it is as good of a time as any to list the 20 best matches that featured one or more of the letters within TLC.

NOTE: The matches that are on this list must have the official stipulation of a Tables Match, Ladder Match, Chairs Match or TLC Match. Let me also preface this article by saying that, due to the fact of it being the most moronic match stipulation I have ever heard of, a Chairs Match will not rear its ugly head in this list.

20. Tables Match: RAW November 2001

1 of 20

Rob Van Dam vs. Dudley Boyz

A night after The Alliance was destroyed at Survivor Series 2001, Rob Van Dam was punished in perhaps the greatest tables match to last just six minutes.

RVD took incredible spots and the table initially didn't break (just like with the Divas table match last night).

Regardless, RVD put on a great show in a short time in his first night as an "official WWE superstar."

19. TLC X: RAW December 2010

2 of 20

The Miz (c) vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler

I have to admit that I didn't like the idea for this match whatsoever at the time. While I watched it, I knew The Miz would not be losing. However, it was set up great with some of the spots in the match.

Michael Cole's involvement also made the match stick out from other TLC matches. Despite being perhaps the worst TLC match of all-time, this match earns a spot on here due to the fact that Lawler was holding his own in this match while fighting a staph infection.

18. WWE Championship: TLC 2009

3 of 20

John Cena (c) vs. Sheamus

To this day, I have a slight inkling that Sheamus wasn't supposed to win that match, at least not at that moment. There are times in wrestling where something happens accidentally, which means that everything else must adjust.

At the time, it looked like Cena slipped and fell into the table by mistake. Perhaps it was the fact that nobody believed Cena would lose the belt to the young guy, Sheamus.

Regardless, it will likely stand as the most shocking tables match in WWE history.

17. No. 1 Contender's Match: TLC 2010

4 of 20

Sheamus vs. John Morrison

Sheamus has learned a lot in the past year. The match that took place between him and John Morrison last night was easily the match of the night.

Some of the spots were straight out of another match we will see later, but the match seemed fresh and exciting.

There was also some doubt that John Morrison would win and become No. 1 contender for the WWE Championship.

This might be on this list because it is still fresh and seems to be that much better than others. Nonetheless, this match was an instant classic.

16. Money In The Bank: WrestleMania XXIV

5 of 20

CM Punk vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Carlito vs. MVP vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. John Morrison

Speaking of John Morrison, the best thing he had ever done with a ladder prior to Sunday was his flip during this match at WrestleMania XXIV.

This match also saw six superstars without much of a thought as to who was going to win. (OK, so nobody was pulling for Carlito, but still...)

15. Triangle Ladder Match: WrestleMania 2000

6 of 20

Dudley Boyz (c) vs Hardy Boyz vs Edge & Christian

Before the term TLC was born, there was a Triangle Ladder Match between Edge and Christian, The Dudley Boyz, and The Hardy Boyz.

This match was very good and honestly deserves a higher spot on this list. However, the image seen with this slide of Jeff Hardy jumping onto Bubba Ray Dudley is the only thing that ever gets remembered from this match.

The problem with that is that this image is often believed to be a part of other, more memorable matches.

14. Undisputed Championship: RAW 2002

7 of 20

The Undertaker (c) vs Jeff Hardy

The best thing about Monday Night RAW in 2002 and 2003 was the unpredictability. Back then, WWE Championship matches took place on free TV often and there were even long title reigns (blasphemy, I know).

Champions fought more than once every four weeks and had difficult title defenses. Don't believe me? Look this match up online and get back to me.

13. World Heavyweight Championship: No Mercy 2008

8 of 20

Chris Jericho (c) vs. Shawn Michaels

I still remember this match vividly. While these two have had some fantastic matches together, this may be the crown jewel in their rivalry.

For those who criticized how weak The Miz has been built as a champion, check back to this reign that Jericho had. See any similarities?

12. ECW Championship: TLC 2009

9 of 20

Christian (c) vs. Shelton Benjamin

You may notice that there are some spots in this match seen in last night's match between Sheamus and Morrison. The difference is that these two did them first and did them better.

The last great match, in my opinion, for Shelton Benjamin in WWE, this match was the reason that some of these slides are so short.

I just kept watching this match over and over. I'm not even kidding.

11. Intercontinental Championship: SummerSlam 1998

10 of 20

The Rock (c) vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley

This match was WWE's way of showing the world that they saw big things with these two men.

However, I don't believe that they foresaw them turning into living legends and being defining figures of their era.

I don't think that there will ever be another match that will show how much two young superstars will become wrestling icons.

10. Tag Team Championship: Smackdown! Extreme

11 of 20

Dudley Boyz (c) vs Hardy Boyz

Too bad that Smackdown! Extreme was not as good as this match was. This match was the opening contest for the first Smackdown to ever broadcast live.

While it wasn't amazingly impressive and didn't have any moments to hang your hat on, it was a solid match all around and never really let down from the high momentum.

Unfortunately, the rest of the show killed that momentum.

9. Tag Team Table Match: Royal Rumble 2000

12 of 20

Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz

This was a great tag team tables match in what was likely the best overall pay-per-view of the 21st century. The match was the very first of its kind and did not disappoint.

It should be no surprise that his match took place at MSG, one of the greatest venues for defining matches, before Edge and Christian threw their hat into the mix.

This match was the first blip that eventually evolved into the TLC rivalry of E&C/Dudleys/Hardys.

8. IC and European Unification: RAW July 2002

13 of 20

Jeff Hardy vs. Rob Van Dam

This was the best way to retire a championship like the European Championship. I remember not really understanding what the point of the title was when it wasn't being defended by European wrestlers or at European venues.

Two of the greatest high-flyers faced off to unify the two titles and make room for the United States Championship.

7. TLC VII: One Night Stand 2008

14 of 20

The Undertaker vs. Edge

The Undertaker can hang in these extreme matches, especially when ladders are involved. One of the larger men to ever participate in a TLC match lost this time around, which banished him from WWE.

The Undertaker would return a few weeks later, but at least he could stay off TV for one entire week (I'm looking at you, Cena).

6. Terri Invitational Tournament: No Mercy 1999

15 of 20

Edge & Christian vs. Hardy Boyz

This wasn't about titles or grudge matches. This was a ladder match about the services of a hot chick with fake boobs. And oh yeah, there was money as a prize too. The Hardys won, which Edge and Christian thought totally reeked of awesomeness.

This was a straight throwback to the old matchups where cash money or managerial services were on the line in the match. This also was the first real sign that Edge and Christian could hang with The Hardys and Dudleys.

5. TLC IV: RAW Roulette October 2002

16 of 20

Kane and The Hurricane (c) vs. Christian & Chris Jericho vs. The Dudley Boyz vs Jeff Hardy & Rob Van Dam

This was just insanity embodied in a match. It also showed how things can quickly change when they have to. The Hurricane was legitimately injured in the match when he and Kane were supposed to retain their titles.

Suddenly, the entire match's ending went out the window and we all saw as the match changed as it went along. Kane grabbed the belts for the win and we were treated to improvisational professional wrestling.

4. The First Ladder Match: WrestleMania X

17 of 20

Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon

If this match wasn't great, ladder matches never would have become popular. Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon climbed a ladder to decide who the true Intercontinental Champion was.

This image helped define Michaels as a main eventer. It is still used to this day in the WWE signature sequence. There isn't much more to say.

3. Money In The Bank I: WrestleMania 21

18 of 20

Edge vs. Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Christian vs. Chris Benoit vs. Kane

The match that evolved the ladder match.

Spots would be developed squarely for MITB. It gave a marquee spot to agile high-flyers at an event like WrestleMania. Just like TLC, the match became its own concept pay-per-view.

Money in the Bank is a great concept, but few top the original. Keep that in mind.

2. TLC II: WrestleMania X-Seven

19 of 20

Edge and Christian vs Dudley Boyz (c) vs Hardy Boyz

Four years before Money in the Bank, TLC the sequel graced WrestleMania with a lot of hype.

There were some absolutely fantastic spots and you could tell that the six men had perfected anything that they did not get right the first time around.

However, remember what I said earlier. Nothing beats the original.

1. TLC I: Summerslam 2000

20 of 20

Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boyz vs. Edge and Christian (c)

The one that started it all.

This was the very first slide I typed, simply because I knew how much this match did for tables, ladders and chairs being used in matches. While the second TLC match had some unforgettable spots, TLC I was just brutal.

It was everything you wanted from a hardcore match. There was carnage everywhere while not having the feel of a match that dragged at all.

I also don't believe I remember seeing more multi-table spots in one match. It seemed like every single person who went through a table also went through at least another one at the same time.

In the end, Edge and Christian retained their belts while also making their two opposing teams look so strong. It was the single greatest moment in tag team wrestling in the 21st century. Oh, how far we have fallen...
