The Top 10 Most Hated Sports Cities In The U.S. 2010
There's two sides to everything.
A sports fan takes great pleasure in not only rooting for his or her team and favorite players, but also in despising rivals and rival players and the city they represent.
Fans can only make the matter worse. Throw a couple snowballs at Santa Claus and your city's in the doghouse for the next 50 years.
It so happens that people dislike winners, particularly the ones who repeat, so you will see cities that have good teams, teams that you just want to knock off the podium. But it's not just about winning...some teams are so bad that their stench makes you hate the city, too. In some rare, drastic cases, fans can even hate their own team and city for a little while.
Some cities are destined to forever appear on this list. Oh yes, New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas are here...but there are cities even more detested than they this year.
Here's 2010's Top 10 Most Hated Sports Cities in the U.S....
10. Chicago
1 of 10
The Bulls are annoying again. They're off to their best start in four years after three seasons of .500 and below basketball. Joakim Noah recently placed first in a poll for "most hated Chicago Bulls player" ever.
The Jay Cutler fan club doesn't even include family members, and especially not fantasy owners. The Bears stand atop a disheveled NFC North, but don't win when you want them to, like against the Patriots.
The reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Blackhawks, are everyone's target in the NHL.
And since the White Sox are always hated, no matter what they do, Chicago cracks the top 10.
9. Washington
2 of 10
Alex Ovechkin appears on just about every list of most hated active NHL players. The Capitals frustrate their opponents with their higher level of play...and their fans with underachieving.
The detestably awful Washington Wizards are up to their old tricks: 6-16 in their first 22 games this season. They finished 30 games under .500 in the 2009-10 season. Yeeeuuchh.
The Nats could use a Casey Stengel.
But look out, the Georgetown Hoyas are at it again.
If the evil Redskins were any better this year, Washington might be a little higher on the list. As it is, D.C. comes in at number nine.
8. Pittsburgh
3 of 10
Pennsylvania is the proud owner of two cities on the list. What's up with you, Pennsylvanians?
The Pittsburgh Steelers, led by the chivalrous occasional-goon, Ben Roethlisberger, have won two of the last five Super Bowls and can do it again this year.
The Penguins are currently the best team in the NHL and just won the Cup two years ago. Word is Cindy Crosby whines to the refs too much.
The Pirates lost 105 games in 2010 and have not had a winning season in an unfathomable 18 years. I know you're not supposed to kick a team when they're down, but please.
7. Dallas/Arlington
4 of 10
Imagine this guy was your boss.
Dallas will always make the top 10 for all of eternity, thanks to the Cowboys, but they've stunk so bad this year that the city could muster only seventh on the list for 2010. Don't you just hate when those Cowboy fans invade your stadium? They're everywhere, like zombies in George Romero movies.
What is it with Dallas and obnoxious owners? The Mavericks are off to a big-time start in the West...after being bounced out of the playoffs 10 years in a row without a title.
In Bleacher Report's latest ranking of most hated NHL players, three Dallas Stars make the top 11.
And the Texas Rangers just made a bunch of enemies up north this season.
6. Durham
5 of 10
You loathsome Blue Devils, you.
Durham makes the top 10 without a major professional sports team thanks to Coach K's perennial winners. The reigning champs are looking head and shoulders above the competition yet again. God help us.
5. Los Angeles
6 of 10
It's bad enough L.A. still can't get itself together to get a pro football team, but even if the city had no other professional team but the Lakers, they'd still make the list every year.
Hey, I don't want to shortchange the Dodgers...they help.
But the back-to-back Lakers and the Kobe vs. Michael discussion take the cake.
As for the Kings...yeah, Southern California and ice...a winning combination.
4. New York
7 of 10
Like Dallas and L.A., New York will always be on the list, due to the fact that it's New York and home to that most reviled team in all of sports: the Yankees.
But it doesn't stop there.
The Giants are looking to take the NFC East. Rex Ryan's rubbing people the wrong way and the big-mouth Jets are not backing it up. The Rangers are proud owners of the most hated player in hockey: Sean Avery.
And don't look now, the brutish Knicks are awake.
Throw in the woeful Mets and Islanders, who make you want to pinch your nose, and you've got the fourth most hated sports city in 2010.
3. Miami
8 of 10
One man single-handedly catapulted Miami into the No. 3 slot: LeBron James.
An impressed P.T. Barnum rose from the grave and asked James for his autograph following the media circus that sniffed LeBron's every fart for months, culminating in a disgraceful, vulgar, and humiliating display led by ESPN barnacle Jim Gray.
Oh yeah, don't forget the widely-disliked Marlins, Hurricanes, and playoff-spoiler Dolphins.
2. Philadelphia
9 of 10
Until a few hours ago Miami was ranked second, but now that nasty team the Philadelphia Phillies have signed Cliff Lee and for less money, thumbing their noses at over eight million New Yorkers, be they Yankee or Met fans. The Phillies, world champions in 2008, have won the NL East four years in a row and now boast the best pitching staff of the century so far: Lee, Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels. Who in the NL is going to beat them? No one.
The Philadelphia Eagles, led by redeemed dog-hater Michael Vick, are looking to steal the NFC East and they weren't even supposed to be good this year. Now the Eagles are looking to ruin everyone's playoff plans, from the Giants to the Packers. Damn them!
And then of course, there are the fans. Yup, still bad.
And that service at Lincoln Financial Field: positively dreadful.
1. Boston
10 of 10
This is the worst picture of Tom Brady I could find. Don't you hate that? Which would you rather see: another Patriots' Super Bowl win or a lockout? It's close.
But we're just getting started with this town.
Remember when you rooted for those lovable losers, the Red Sox? They hadn't won a championship in oh so many years. But after breaking the curse against the Yankees and winning two World Series, it's perfectly okay to hate them again. And that Red Sox Nation. I'm not sure they use utensils.
And remember when you rooted for that lovable loser Kevin Garnett? Aaaaahhhh, not any more. The Celtics won it all in 2007 and have finished in first the last three years. Here they go again, dominating the East in 2010. Enough is enough already.
At least the Bruins haven't won a Cup in 40 years.
Yes, Boston's got it all...2010's most hated city in U.S. sports.
Got something to say? Leave a comment. Left a city you hate out of the countdown? Let everybody know! Maybe it will influence 2011's list.
