Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings, Start Streak Collapsing with Metrodome Week 14

Brandon GalvinDec 13, 2010

The Minnesota Vikings Metrodome roof collapsed over the weekend due to heavy snow. Fox Sports first aired the shocking, jaw-dropping and astonishing footage of snow ripping through the Metrodome’s roof and filling the stadium.

The game was postponed from Sunday afternoon at 1 pm until Monday night at 7:20 pm. It will be held at Ford Field in Detroit.

Was this an eerie blessing from the football gods to give Brett Favre 30 extra hours to rest and prep his sprained throwing shoulder in order to keep his other-worldly consecutive start streak intact?

Right now, it appears unlikely, according to Vikings interim head coach Leslie Frazier who is considering Brett Favre doubtful despite the dreaded game-time decision tag.

Favre reportedly sent a text message to USA Today stating he doubts the 30-hour postponement will be long enough for him to play in the game.

Doubtful.

This is the game’s greatest warrior. If Favre is alive, all we know is that for 321 straight games including the playoffs, he will start the very next game despite whatever is ailing him at the moment.

While this appears to be the biggest threat to the streak, gut feeling says that Brett Favre will gut it out. Once the pads and the bright lights of Detroit’s Ford Field are on, Favre will feel the excitement and the adrenaline pumping long enough to run out there with his teammates to start against the New York Giants.

At the very least, he can be pulled from the game. It’s happened before.

Favre has four games until he retires, so he can’t let that remarkable and unprecedented streak fall victim to the shoulder injury.

Favre isn’t the only concern on Frazier’s mind.

Percy Harvin is listed as doubtful for the game after dealing with migraines earlier in the week. Harvin did travel with the team to Detroit; it remains to be seen if Harvin will give it a go against the Giants’ tough defense.

This same tough defense most likely isn’t worrying about which quarterback they may square off against. Whether it’s Brett Favre making his 298th consecutive regular season start or Tarvaris Jackson, the Giants’ supremely athletic defensive line will bother and hurry and disrupt either quarterback all night long.

The Giants’ main concern at the moment is if Eli Manning will once again be without his two starting wide receivers Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith. Both gifted receivers traveled with the team but remain questionable to play Monday night, as Nicks nurses a leg injury and Smith still bothered by his pectoral injury.

Eli Manning would definitely rather his wide receivers play as he has greatly missed their fantastic hands and solid route running. Manning has been working with Mario Manningham and castaway free agents Derek Hagan and Michael Clayton.

Regardless, this entire contest will come down to who can run the ball better. Both of these teams boast rushing games towards the top of the league.

Adrian Peterson is one of the premier players in the league. He owned the Buffalo Bills for 107 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs stole the Redskins’ hearts last week when they combined for 200 yards and four touchdowns rushing.

Whichever team can run the ball with more power and control the clock should win this matchup. The Giants desperately need this win to keep pace with the Philadelphia Eagles atop the NFC East division.

The Minnesota Vikings hope to extend Leslie Frazier’s winning streak after disappointing earlier in the year under Brad Childress.

The most exciting part of the matchup, however, won’t even take place in the game. Instead, it’s seeing beforehand if Brett Favre will extend his epic consecutive start streak.
