Carlos Tevez's Transfer Request Shows Problem With Manchester City's Millions

Andrew JordanDec 13, 2010

In the summer of 2009, Argentine striker Carlos Tevez made a shocking move when he decided to leave Manchester United for their "noisy neighbors" in Eastlands, Manchester City.

With some major additions alongside Tevez going into the 2009 season, many wondered exactly what would transpire with Man City during the season.

Following a hot start, City suffered a heartbreaking last-second defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, which caused the season to fall apart around manager Mark Hughes and company.

But after a 4-3 victory over Sunderland on December 19, Hughes was fired and Roberto Mancini came in to manage the club.

Mancini was able to inspire City to nearly get the final Champions League spot in the Premier League, but Tottenham were able to beat City at the end of the season to get that spot.

This season, Man City have been better than last season, but they continue to deal with a problem that has become all to familiar for the Blues since the Abu Dhabi United Group took over: a lack of playing time for star players.

With a numerous amount of star players on its roster, there have been many players that have been unhappy with the amount of playing time that they receive.

As a result, the likes of Steven Ireland, Robinho, Craig Bellamy and Martin Petrov have all left Eastlands during the last year and all have been extremely unhappy with the amount of playing time that they received.

Now, Carlos Tevez, who is arguably the biggest transfer that Manchester City have gotten since the new ownership regime, submitted a transfer request on December 11, which was promptly rejected by Manchester City management.

During the last year, Tevez has continued to vent his displeasure with European football by saying he wants to leave Europe by 2014 and said that he wants to retire to spend more time with his family.

Tevez also said that he will only play for Boca Juniors should his father allow him to once he returned to Argentina.

In a released statement on December 13, Tevez said his relationship with club executives had "broken down" and was "beyond repair."

Tevez also said in this statement that this move was not about money.

Through all of this, the quote "money cannot buy happiness" is completely true when it comes to Manchester City.

As a result of Tevez's statements, we can also imply that Tevez really wants to leave Europe and will probably head back to South America.

But the biggest indication out of Tevez's comments is that despite what Manchester City has done, it is extremely unlikely that they will be able to win anything anytime soon with a dysfunctional system to deal with their best player.

Since Tevez has come to Eastlands, the Argentinian striker has scored 39 times in 58 matches and has been the best player that City have bought during the current regime.

Tevez put everything he could into each match for City and was as loyal of a player that will ever play at Eastlands under the current regime, even when he wanted to leave.

But now, Tevez will in all likelihood leave Manchester for good this time and will look to finally find a side with which he is happy.

Meanwhile for Manchester City, they will be licking their wounds for a very long time, as they will look to repair their reputation after letting one of the world's best talents leave not even a year and a half after City took him from their arch rivals.

Tevez's departure could also open the door for many of City's other high-paid stars to leave in order to win elsewhere.

And City will certainly need to act fast in order to keep their collection of stars together and happy in Manchester.
