Carmelo Anthony: Report Says Denver Nuggets Forward Will Be Traded by February

Patrick ClarkeDec 9, 2010

Carmelo Anthony has been the center of attention for the Denver Nuggets all season long.

Will he walk?

Will he go all Chris Paul on us and suddenly re-sign with the Nuggets?

Or will the franchise ship him out for something in return?

Until now, none of these questions have been answered.

But, according to a report by Ken Berger on Wednesday, the Nuggets front office has made the decision to trade Carmelo Anthony if he is not re-signed by the February trade deadline.

One team in particular that would be able to supply the Nuggets with some young talent in return is the New Jersey Nets.

Berger mentions that a package of Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Kris Humphries and two first-round picks could be on the table.

The Nuggets would love nothing more than to get something from their investment and avoid a Phoenix Suns-Amar'e Stoudemire situation from a season ago.

However, Carmelo has the power to kill any deals that are out there if he chooses not to sign an extension.

The one other possibility, which seems very unlikely given where the front office stands at this time on Carmelo, is that he walks as a free agent this offseason and joins forces with Amar'e Stoudemire in New York.

Carmelo has shown some interest in the Knicks, and New York has the best odds of landing him outside of a trade.

Still, through all the distraction, Denver is 13-8 and hanging onto a playoff spot.

Carmelo has had a decent season thus far also, averaging over 22 points and eight rebounds per game.

At the moment the All-Star forward is suffering from a knee injury, which doesn't look to be all that serious.

However, his field goal percentage has decreased over the past few games (22-72 FG, 2-10 3FG, in last four games).

None of that will ultimately affect where Carmelo ends up though.

Anthony's value as one of the league's most gifted scorers will remain, and regardless of what the Nuggets get in return for Anthony, it will hardly make up for what they have lost.
