Second Ashes Test: England 1-0 Australia
England took a 1-0 series lead in the second test match in Adelaide after they hammered Australia by an innings and 71 runs.
England won the toss and elected to field on what looked like a good batting wicket, but the hosts were soon in trouble at 2-3 and despite Michael Hussey's superb 96 only Shane Watson (51) and Brad Haddin (56) offered any resistance and they were all out for 245.
James Anderson, up to number three in the ICC bowling rankings, took 4-51, number two in the rankings, Graeme Swann returned figures of 2-70, Stuart Broad 1-39 and Steven Finn 1-71.
Andrew Strauss again missed out in the first innings as he was dismissed for one but Kevin Pietersen (227) and Alastair Cook (148) hit centuries while Jonathan Trott (78) and Ian Bell's 68 not out helped England declare on 620-5 after 152 overs.
The Aussie bowlers again failed to impress with Ryan Harris (2-84) or Shane Watson (1-44) the pick of the lot. Xavier Dochety returned 1-158 off just 27 overs.
Australia looked to be battling to save the Test at 238-3 but the fall of Michael Clarke (80) to Kevin Pietersen on the last ball of day four proved key in the final outcome.
Day five came with possible rain showers but Australia couldn't even resist past lunch as they slumped to 303, giving England a win by an innings and 71 runs.
Watson (57) and Hussey (52) played well to get set and then rather threw their wickets away and the rest put in a very un-Australian like resistance as England's ruthlessness paid off.
Harris became only the second Australian to score a King Pair, after Adam Gilchrist against India, at a time when his side really needed him to hang around.
Swann was the bowling pick this time with 5-91, Anderson got 2-92, Finn 2-60 and Pietersen 1-10.
England only need one more win from the remaining three test matches but for Australia to regain the urn, they need to win twice and stop England winning the other test match.
Both sides will be changed for the next test in Perth, starting on Thursday 16 December. Stuart Broad has an abdominal injury and has returned back to England for treatment. Tim Bresnan or Chris Tremlett are likely to be called up to replace him.
Australia will be without Simon Katich Achilles due to a Achilles tendon problem while Marcus North and Xavier Docherty's places are hanging by a thread.
An England XI face Victoria in Melbourne from December 10-12 were we may get an insight into replacements for the WACA test match, as England try to clinch the urn and Australia try and get one hand back on the trophy.
