UFC 124: Power Ranking Georges St. Pierre's 14 UFC Victories

Sean SmithDec 7, 2010

This Saturday, Georges St. Pierre will attempt to defend his UFC Welterweight Championship against Josh Koscheck.

If St. Pierre is able to win in front of what will most likely be a heavily pro-St. Pierre audience in Montreal, it would be a historic night for the Canadian.

With a victory, St. Pierre would extend his streak of consecutive title defenses to five, which would tie him with Matt Hughes and Tito Ortiz for the second longest streak of that kind in UFC history.

Also, a win over Koscheck would give St. Pierre his 15th victory in the UFC. St. Pierre is currently tied with Ortiz for fourth in all-time UFC wins. Hughes currently holds the record with 18 UFC wins.

Ranking every UFC win for one of the most decorated fighters in the promotion's history won't be an easy task, but it could be worse, right? I could be ranking every professional victory of Travis Fulton's career.

14. Dan Hardy @ UFC 111

1 of 14

While the victory did extend his streak of title defenses, St. Pierre was expected to be able to finish Dan Hardy.

St. Pierre had multiple opportunities to finish the fight with a submission. One could claim that this fight went the distance because of Hardy's toughness, but St. Pierre went on to blame his own flawed technique for being unable to complete the submissions.

13. Jay Hieron @ UFC 48

2 of 14

The second of his career, a win over Jay Hieron was enough to earn St. Pierre his first shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship.

The quick TKO victory made for a nice start to St. Pierre's highlight reel, but a win over Hieron—who has gone 0-2 in the UFC in his career—doesn't rank anywhere near some of the wins that St. Pierre has posted over legends of the sport.

12. Karo Parisyan @ UFC 46

3 of 14

The subject of much hype, a 22-year-old St. Pierre made his UFC debut against Karo Parisyan. St. Pierre controlled most of the fight but had a few tense moments as he was nearly submitted in the third round.

Overall, it was a strong debut for the future champion, but the fight showed that St. Pierre had some improvements to make in order to become great.

11. Jason Miller @ UFC 52

4 of 14

After losing to Hughes in his first chance at the UFC Welterweight Championship, St. Pierre took one fight in the Canadian MMA promotion TKO. After easily winning his fight against Dave Strasser in TKO, St. Pierre returned to the UFC to fight Jason "Mayhem" Miller.

St. Pierre took the decision victory in this fight and showed that he was ready to begin another run at a title shot.

10. Frank Trigg @ UFC 54

5 of 14

At the time, Frank Trigg was the most experienced fighter St. Pierre had defeated in his career. Trigg entered the fight with two recent title fights against Hughes.

By defeating Trigg in the same way Hughes had in both of those title fights—with a rear naked choke—St. Pierre also showed that he was becoming a student of the sport.

9. Thiago Alves @ UFC 100

6 of 14

Heading into his fight with St. Pierre, Thiago Alves was on a seven-fight win streak. More importantly, Alves had defeated excellent wrestlers in Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes in his last two fights. Alves showed excellent striking and strong takedown defense in those two wins.

For those reasons, Alves was expected to pose a stylistic problem for St. Pierre.

So much for that.

St. Pierre took Alves down repeatedly and dominated the fight.

8. Jon Fitch @ UFC 87

7 of 14

Like Alves, Jon Fitch was riding a long winning streak heading into his title fight against St. Pierre. Fitch's 16 consecutive victories heading into that fight included wins over Alves and Diego Sanchez.

Also like Alves, Fitch was completely dominated by St. Pierre, losing 50-43 on one judge's scorecard.

7. Sean Sherk @ UFC 56

8 of 14

As I fill out these rankings, I'm beginning to sense a pattern of St. Pierre putting an end to lengthy winning stints. Sean Sherk went twelve fights without a loss before he met St. Pierre in the Octagon. Not to mention, Sherk's only loss in his 31 professional fights before facing St. Pierre had been against Hughes.

Not only did St. Pierre defeat Sherk, but he became the first fighter to finish "The Muscle Shark."

6. Josh Koscheck @ UFC 74

9 of 14

In terms of the ability of the fighter he defeated, St. Pierre's win over Josh Koscheck may not rank above some of the aforementioned fights.

However, this fight was more meaningful to St. Pierre's career. After losing his title in a demoralizing upset to Matt Serra, St. Pierre was in need of a victory. St. Pierre defeated more than just Koscheck at UFC 74.

St. Pierre showed that he could overcome adversity.

5. B.J. Penn @ UFC 58

10 of 14

At UFC 58, B.J. Penn made his highly anticipated return to the Octagon. Unfortunately for Penn, St. Pierre would lead the welcoming committee—or unwelcoming committee as it were.

While a win over Penn marked one of the biggest wins of St. Pierre's career, the actual fight lacked that same luster. St. Pierre's win was somewhat marred by what some considered a controversial decision.

Also, Penn's accusations of St. Pierre greasing led to negative speculation. An investigation found no violation on St. Pierre's part, but some remained suspicious.

4. Matt Serra @ UFC 83

11 of 14

Then Interim UFC Welterweight Champion, St. Pierre was attempting to recapture his undisputed title from Serra. In a rematch of an embarrassing loss for St. Pierre, Serra was completely dominated and finished in the second round.

If it were not for Serra's inactivity before this fight and 1-2 record after, this fight would probably be a win of even greater stature in St. Pierre's career.

3. Matt Hughes @ UFC 79

12 of 14

The final fight of the trilogy between these two great fighters, St. Pierre's dominant victory over Hughes, allowed him to earn the Interim UFC Welterweight Championship.

Ultimately, this fight would symbolize a changing of the guard from one dominant UFC Welterweight Champion to another.

2. Matt Hughes @ UFC 65

13 of 14

At UFC 65, St. Pierre would win the UFC Welterweight Championship for the first time with an impressive victory over long-reigning champion Hughes.

Following this first loss to St. Pierre, Hughes has not had the opportunity to fight for the undisputed title again. Then, St. Pierre was the fighter who dethroned the legend. Now, St. Pierre has become the fighter who may be about to surpass the legend.

1. B.J. Penn @ UFC 94

14 of 14

St. Pierre vs. Penn II is arguably the biggest fight in UFC history. With a win, Penn would have become the first fighter ever to hold titles in two UFC divisions concurrently.

St. Pierre made certain that Penn didn't make history at his expense.

By beating Penn, legitimate talk began regarding St. Pierre's status among the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.
