LeBron James: Rant on Comments Still Being Made Regarding the 'Decision'
Let me start off by saying this post will not be liked by everyone. Although you may or may not like the post, feel free to comment and leave your opinion.
Now on to the rant.
I was watching the Miami Heat versus Cleveland Cavaliers game tonight. As expected LeBron James was not received well in Cleveland. What I didn't quite expect is that commentators are still talking about how LeBron made his decision the "wrong" way.
The decision was five months ago. I thought I would hear comments about it in the first quarter and maybe at halftime and after the game. Instead I feel like the broadcast on TNT focused on LeBron and spent over half the time talking about something that happened a while ago.
I understand that it was his first game in Cleveland as a member of the Heat. It just seems as if him coming back "home" really took away from the game itself.
I am also getting tired of people saying Cavs fans are mad because of the way he made the decision. Regardless of the way the decision was made, I believe more fans have a problem with the fact that he left in the first place. If LeBron had done that one hour special saying he was returning to the Cavs I don't think anyone would be talking about it.
Cavs fans are pissed because he chose someone over them. He chose a different city, a different organization and different fans, and when it comes down to it that is what Cavs fans are upset about.
Many feel the way James made the decision was wrong. I am probably one of the very few that can see both sides of it.
LeBron's choices for sharing his decision was what? Hold a press conference (which is almost the same as what he did), tell Dan Gilbert (Cavs owner) before everyone else and have it leaked so he couldn't even tell people himself, make a sneaky decision and have people find out some time after (again kind of like what he did), or do it the way he did it.
LeBron decided to go on national television and tell the world all at once that he decided to sign with the Miami Heat. He was a free agent at the time—meaning he could talk and sign with anyone without having to tell the Cavs.
Did he owe the Cavs an explanation? Maybe, but at the same time maybe it is easier to make a clean break. There is nothing the Cavs front office could have done about it so you have to move on.
What did we as fans get out of the exchange.
Well, all of us found out at once what the decision was because he said days in advance when he was going to announce it. If you couldn't watch or didn't care I would still bet you looked up the results on the Internet. All the money that the show earned (I believe over $200,000) went to the Boys and Girls Club of America.
My point is, whatever you feel about the situation and whether LeBron was somewhat wrong or completely wrong, it is time to get over it. His decision from July 2010 is not going to change. On top of that, people need to stop giving Cavs fans an excuse for being angry by saying that it was the way he made the decision, because it isn't.
I know that if my franchise player left my team (even more so if it is his home town and he wasn't a jerk) I would be pissed regardless of the way he left. But, there comes a time when you get over it, and the time has come for Cavs fans, NBA fans and the NBA as a whole, or we will still be talking about the decision in June while the NBA Finals are going on and that can't be good for the NBA.
