FIFA World Cup 2022: The U.S. Denied to Host and Why FIFA Blew It

David DanielsDec 2, 2010

FIFA announced Thursday that the United States would not host a World Cup any time soon as Qatar will host in 2022.

You know what the reaction was for probably 90 percent of America?

Where in the world is Qatar?

After figuring out it's in the Middle East and wondering how the Middle East could beat the United States in anything, they ask a question that sums up why exactly FIFA blew it:

Who cares?

The United States doesn't care about soccer at all.  While fútbol is the most popular sport in the world, in the USA its popularity falls behind football, baseball, basketball, hockey, ultimate fighter, golf, tennis, and boxing.  I even see poker on ESPN more than soccer.

That is exactly why it was a huge mistake that FIFA didn't give the United States the World Cup in 2022.

The biggest media market on the planet has zero interest in soccer and the United States hosting would instantly increase the nation's interest.

FIFA had a chance to win over one of the few countries in the world who couldn't care less about their sport.

A 2022 World Cup could have easily catapulted soccer's popularity past tennis and golf's while even threatening to lap hockey and the ultimate fighter (if the fad's still around by then).

Instead of watching the World Cup in 2022, I'll be checking out some high quality Texas Hold 'em on ESPN2.
