FIFA Makes Biggest Mistake in History By Giving Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup

Jo-Ryan SalazarDec 2, 2010

Now, I don't write this out of spite or out of impulse. It would be so easy for me to vent and rage and rant mindlessly over the Qatar Football Federation successfully making their case to FIFA today.

But, I write this scratching my head and wondering on this cold morning in America if the corrupt band of rich old scagbags known as the FIFA Executive Committee lost their minds or fell for the worst trap yet.

I say it's both. With no point of return.

I can understand why FIFA chose not to go with the USA. We last hosted this circus in 1994 and apparently for these folks, 1994 and 2004 are one and the same.

Fair enough. We set a precedent, and the development of the game here is strong enough that it would not be impactful for the ExCo's standards outside of the bottom line. One cash cow is enough for them, no need for too.

And you would have to be blind, stupid and/or possibly dead to not realize that Japan and Korea's bids were just too damn soon. Twenty years. Just that? Mind-numbing. Waste of time and resources. A no-win situation.

The real loser here in this whole vote-buying llama drama is Australia. Bar none. The Aussies were shafted going through 32 years of not qualifying, having to go through playoff heartbreak left and right, and they get shafted again.

Somewhere at National Rugby League headquarters in Sydney and the Australian Football League headquarters in Melbourne, there are some very happy staff and bigshots waving Qatari flags.

And if they aren't, what a shame. They should be, because their seasons have been successfully spared of having a monkey wrench thrown in via the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Congratulations, you lucky blokes.

But back to Qatar. Here is a country that literally will be an oven in 2022, perhaps even at risk from the likes of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda and the mujahideen sabotaging security, while its population doubles—maybe even triples—for one whole month.

The Qatari bid essentially used a novel vote-buying approach of installing climate-controlled stadiums that will no doubt be constructed by underpaid outcasts (we like to call them contractors) from the third world with an enviromentally-friendly aspect to it.

To sweeten the deal, after this whole circus in the middle of Al-Jazeeraland is over, they plan to dump the excess seats to 22 different armpits of the world.

Hope these Sheiks are ready to foot the bill when dumping them. It's as if to say, "Here's some junk from the World Cup. Do something with it."

Now, one of the guys behind this bid, Sheikh Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, has promised that there will be "No white elephants." Liar. There will be 22 of them, lest those cities put it to use for the next century after all of this is said and done!

Why didn't FIFA consider Australia? Again, they have shown that they are worthy to host the World Cup. They've hosted the Olympics, they've hosted the Commonwealth Games, both successfully...why should the FIFA 2022 World Cup be any different?

With the decision, the FIFA ExCo suckers have made poor Oz the only continent to never have hosted this showcase event. It's a shame, because they have been proven to be a winner.

The development of football in Australia is going to take a hit with this failed bid. And even with the passage of 11 and a half years, Qatar is still going to be a footballing minnow and will not have any chance of getting even a point in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

This was just a dumb decision in the part of the FIFA Executive Committee. I understand their decision to not give the USA consideration, but Australian soccer fans around the world may have felt that they were screwed.

Let's just hope that nobody gets blown up in that oven known as Qatar when 2022 comes along. May God have mercy on us all. And those rats from the FIFA Executive Committee.
