Cam Newton Investigation: Auburn QB Eligible, So What's Next?

Bleacher ReportDec 1, 2010

Cam Newton investigation will undoubtedly be three of the most heard words Saturday when Auburn takes on South Carolina in the SEC championship game.

After a ruling handed down from the NCAA earlier today following an investigation into the actions of the Auburn quarterback's father, who had reportedly sought out a pay-for-play situation for his son, Newton will be suiting up in the title game. Auburn had ruled Newton ineligible for Saturday's game yesterday after the NCAA came to the understanding the rules were violated. When the NCAA determined that Newton was unaware of the actions made by Cecil Newton, the governing body granted Auburn's request for Newton to be reinstated.

According to the Associated Press, Newton's father reportedly asked for as much as $180,000 from Mississippi State recruiters prior to Cam's commitment to Auburn. The NCAA's investigation into the potential rules violation was sparked when former Bulldogs player Kenny Rogers spoke about Cecil Newton's requests.

Newton's father denies any wrongdoing, leaving plenty more speculation and a lengthy legal investigation into the issue.

Now, the only question that remains is: Where do we go from here?

For Cam Newton, all appears to be clear. In the short term, he has to prepare for Saturday's conference championship game. Beyond that, a bowl game, the National Championship, likely, assuming the Tigers remain unbeaten through Saturday.

The Auburn quarterback is also a front-runner to win the Heisman Award. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound quarterback has thrown for 2,254 yards and 24 touchdowns this year while rushing for 1,336 yards and another 18 scores on the ground.

Needless to say, Newton has plenty to look forward to before likely bolting for the NFL after this season as noted in a recent report by Draftinsider.net

But what's left of the investigation? And Cecil Newton?

Newton could face up to a maximum of two years in prison and a $10,000 fine for violating Mississippi's Uniform Athlete Agent Act, which handles rules and regulations for sports agents in the state.

Whether it's the NCAA re-opening the case or the state of Mississippi, it looks like the storm isn't clear for Cecil Newton.
