Dallas Cowboys: Can They Contain the Indianapolis Colts Pass Attack?

Jason HenryNov 30, 2010

Jason Garrett’s Dallas Cowboys may be cut from a different cloth than the Wade Phillips version. This team is hungry, aggressive, never quits and seems to respond to Garrett’s no-nonsense style of coaching.

They may need all of that and then some this weekend as they prepare to face off against the suddenly reeling Indianapolis Colts. Peyton Manning’s Indiana army sits at 6-5 after a sobering loss at the hands of the surging San Diego "Super" Chargers.

Manning’s arm had a pretty good workout as he threw 48 passes and two touchdowns last Sunday, but the most important stat for Eli’s brother was probably his four interceptions. Petyon, yeah the other Manning man, threw four picks as the Colts were beat 36-14.

So this Sunday the Cowboys take their less than stellar secondary to see a man who, before Sunday, was considered to be the MVP of this here National Football League.

The questions now turn to the Dallas defense and Dave Campo’s secondary: Can they stop Peyton Manning?

The short answer is, probably not. But how can a team with two Pro Bowl corners not give Manning a run for his money? Well, I may have your answer.

Last week against the defending Super Bowl Champs, the New Orleans Saints, the Cowboys gave up 333 passing yards and a late touchdown for the Saints to take the lead. Last year’s breakout defensive star for the ‘Boys, Mike Jenkins, is struggling to stay with receivers in man and has even had a hard time adjusting to the Cowboys new zone attack.

Terrance Newman is banged up and Alan Ball and Orlando Scandrick just haven’t panned out like the Cowboys had hoped.

Unfortunately for Dallas, their best defense this weekend may be a great offensive running game. Felix Jones and Tashard Choice may hold the key for a Cowboys victory.

By keeping Manning on the sideline and controlling the clock, the Cowboys have a pretty good chance of improving their record to 4-8. Of course, there is no chance for them to make the playoffs at this point, but I believe they are finally playing for pride.

In regards to the offense, back-up quarterback Jon Kitna has played just about lights out, well, for him at least. He’s 38 years old and he’s controlling his mistakes and making great decisions. Not to mention he has Dez Bryant and Miles Austin to throw balls to.

The Colts' defense is just about atrocious and if Dallas is able to garner any type of momentum on offense, then there is a great chance for them to steal one in Indy.

But brother Peyton is probably angrier than a herd of angry Colts and if he gets going, then it may be "Goodnight, Irene" in Dallas.
