College Football Crapshoot: Who Eats Oregon Duck on Thanksgiving? Nobody!

Alfred KonuwaNov 25, 2010

The best weekend (kinda) of college football is upon us as, by Sunday, we’ll have a pretty good idea of who will be playing in the national championship game.

Today is Thanksgiving, and I’ll be thankful once Boise State and TCU are blown out of BCS title contention—something that isn’t likely to happen with the schedule they play.

Here’s what I know will happen…

I know Texas A&M (-3.5) will cover at Texas. This is a bigger game for Texas A&M than Texas, and although the Aggies have had the better year, they’re still considered the little brother in this series.

With the Big 12 title still in their sights, should Nebraska throw up on themselves, Texas A&M should pour it on in a game that has second half blowout written all over it.

I know Wisconsin (-23) will cover vs. Northwestern. Northwestern can’t even be considered scrappy anymore, they’re just plain bad. The Badgers on the other hand, who are quietly making a case as the best team in college football, are quite good.

Wisconsin’s superior running game will be no match for Northwestern’s futile defense, who just last week were sandblasted by lowly Illinois.

The Badgers still have an outside shot at national championship contention, and another 80 point performance could help. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw just that in this spot.

Here’s what I think will happen: Ohio State (-16.5) will cover vs Michigan. Michigan’s defense is God awful, and I shutter to think what Terrelle Pryor and the Buckeye offense will be able to do against Greg Robinson’s unit (for now).

I think Denard Robinson can razzle and dazzle all he wants, but it’s only going to get him so far against a good Buckeye defense. And by so far, I mean the sidelines.

The Buckeyes should have no problem with this one once the emotion dies down in the second half. I think.

I think Auburn will win the Iron Bowl. With more at stake and a better quarterback, give me Auburn even if they have to travel.

Alabama has struggled against top flight competition in the SEC as of late, and I am not convinced that the Tide’s talented, ballhawking secondary will be able to effectively close in on Cam Newton when he decides to take off.

Auburn wins, and those in favor of a real national championship game (until, of course, it is ruled ineligible) rejoice. I think.

Here’s what I’m probably wrong about: I’m probably wrong, but Oregon (-19) will cover vs Arizona. Arizona will be another tough test for the Ducks, and people seem to think that Cal unleashed the blueprint on stopping Oregon with all that fake injury stuff.

But Oregon at home and able to smell the coach’s trophy will be less prone for an upset. Looking vulnerable the past couple of weeks has renewed Oregon’s focus, and they should get right back to looking unstoppable against a formidable Arizona team. Nobody wins at Autzen Stadium, and the Wildcats won’t even come close.

I’m probably wrong, but Boise State (-14) will blow away Nevada. Boise State backers will try to convince you that Nevada is a real test for the Broncos. “Why, just look at what they did to Cal” has become their calling card.

What they won’t tell you is that Cal has been terrible this year, especially on the road which is exactly where they were embarrassed against the Wolf Pack. Nevada shouldn’t be within four touchdowns of the opportunistic Broncos, let alone two. That’s a propaganda point spread; give the points.
