Herschel Sims: What He Will Mean For Oklahoma State
Herschel Sims the 5'10" running back from Abilene, Texas committed in April to play for the Oklahoma State Cowboys next season.
Sims is one of the most highly regarded recruits in the nation and would have been a big land for any team in the nation.
Here is what Sims is going to mean for the Cowboys next season.
Someone to Replace Kendall Hunter
1 of 7
Kendall Hunter has quietly been one of the best running backs in college football this season. He is ranked third in rushing yards, only behind Robert Rainey, the Western Kentucky back who is getting 45 hand-offs per game, and Denard Robinson.
Hunter has rushed for a total of 1,461 yards for 16 touchdowns this season.
Hunter will surely be a highly touted draft pick this season in the NFL draft, fortunately for Oklahoma State they have Hunter to replace him.
More than likely Sims will be the back-up at the beginning of the season, backing up Joseph Randle, but expect Sims to get a lot of playing time in his freshman season.
More Star Power to Their Already Star Offense
2 of 7
Oklahoma State has one of the most powerful offenses in the nation. Led by quarterback Brandon Weeden, who has thrown for 3,780 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Weeden who should be returning with star wide-out Justin Blackmon who has caught 94 passes for 1,560 yards and 17 touchdowns this season.
Adding Sims to this already star-studded line-up could prove deadly to opponents.
Bring a Receiving Threat Out Of The Backfield
3 of 7
It seems as though the Cowboys don't need anymore help in throwing the ball, but they will get some next season as Sims is a great pass catcher out of the outfield.
Although the numbers don't look high, due to the fact his high school game plan was give the ball to Sims, he caught 23 receptions for 371 yards last season for four touchdowns.
Sims is going to bring that threat out of the backfield, making the play action really hurt opponents.
Durability to The Backfield
4 of 7
Sims has been a durable back throughout his high school career. In his junior season, Sims ran the ball 250 times. This number is much more than he will see in college for a single season, but the hits area also a lot harder in college football.
Versatility
5 of 7
Not only can Sims run over opponents with his brute strength and leg power, but he can also be a finesse runner that can take it outside to score the big one.
His speed is great as he runs a 4.43 in the 40 yard dash.
Look for Sims to get a lot of third down reps as he is a good third-down back that can not only catch the ball for a big gain, but can run it for those tough yards as well.
A Heisman Trophy?
6 of 7
Yes, it is a bit early to already be hyping this kid up as a future Heisman winner, but it could happen. His ability to make the big play and lead his team to victory in big games would be enough to win the Heisman.
Although he will not win it is Freshman year, he very well could have a shot at the coveted trophy in his final three years of college football.
A Top Ten Team To a Top Five Team?
7 of 7
Right now Oklahoma State is sitting at the number nine spot in the rankings. With the addition of this stud running back and return of a lot of veteran players, look for Oklahoma State to be near the top of everybody's pre-season rankings next season, the question is can they stay on top for a shot at the title?
