Denard Robinson of Michigan Wolverines Pushing Cam Newton for Heisman
Cam Newton of the Auburn Tigers still leads the Heisman race despite having a bye in Week 12.
Newton has all but locked this race up, but any more slip-ups in the public eye could be his undoing.
Newton has been everything for the Tigers, however. His leadership gives hope to everyone on the team, as they believe he will do whatever it takes to will the team to victory. Newton is too gifted and has performed too well not to be recognized as the Heisman winner.
Still, it is never a one-man race for the Heisman. There is always somebody creeping up. Denard Robinson has placed himself back at the front of the race with a fantastic game against Wisconsin.
With a host of other deserving candidates, who hurt or helped their chances of winning the coveted Heisman Trophy in Week 12? Has any other college superstar thrown his name into the Heisman hat?
6. Terrelle Pryor, Ohio St.
1 of 6
Pryor has gradually brought the Buckeyes back into the BCS Top 10 after they dropped outside the Top 10 when they lost to Wisconsin.
Pryor is the unquestioned leader of this team, and they will go as far as he takes them.
Ohio St. won a tough road game against Iowa this past weekend.
Pryor had a rough game though. He completed just 54.5 percent of his passes for 195 yards, a touchdown and two picks. He did rush 15 times for 78 yards.
Pryor’s Heisman dreams darkened weeks ago, and he didn’t do any favors for himself this past weekend despite the victory.
5. Andrew Luck, Stanford
2 of 6
The newest addition to the Heisman race.
Luck is quite possibly already penciled in as a top two pick in April’s NFL draft. He has all of the tools to succeed at the pro level.
He currently has his team steadily inching up the BCS rankings, as they now sit No. 6 in this week’s poll.
Luck is currently tied for seventh among his peers with 24 passing touchdowns. He has also rushed for three scores.
With only seven interceptions and a 70.2 completion percentage, Luck is clearly doing a fantastic job at an effective and efficient rate. He has only been sacked four times, so he is getting the ball out quickly. He has thrown for 2,746 yards.
Again California in Week 12, Luck completed 80 percent of his passes and threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 72 yards.
After his tackle on USC’s Shareece Wright, I’m a fan for life.
4. Kellen Moore, Boise St.
3 of 6
As usual, Kellen Moore has his high-powered Broncos offense rolling.
His defense got the job done in Week 12, posting a shutout against Fresno St. However, Moore’s offense put up 51 points.
Moore completed 71.1 percent of his passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns. Surprisingly, Moore threw an interception...just his fifth of the season. We’ll let him slide on that one.
On the season, Moore has thrown for 28 touchdowns and 2,921 yards while completing 71.8 percent of his passes. Moore has been more efficient this year, as his 71.8 completion percentage is a career high; however, he may fail to match last year’s touchdown and passing yard numbers.
3. Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma St.
4 of 6
Oklahoma St. continues to move up the rankings, placing No. 9 this week. Much of the team’s success could be attributed to Justin Blackmon, who has easily been the most impressive receiver in the nation this season.
Blackmon leads the nation in receiving yards by 170 yards. He still leads the nation in touchdown receptions with 17. He averages almost 30 more yards per game than Greg Salas. He is second in receptions with 94 compared to Ryan Broyles’ 106.
We should keep in mind Blackmon has only played in 10 games, while Salas and Broyles have both played in 11.
Blackmon lit up Kansas with 10 receptions for 130 yards and a score.
Just another day at the office.
2. LaMichael James, Oregon
5 of 6
In nine games, James has rushed for 1,422 yards. James averages more yards per game than any other rusher in the nation with 158 yards. He is tied for second in rushing touchdowns with 17.
The Ducks had a bye this week after being bottled up by Cal. They should bounce back November 26 against Arizona. With the offense well rested, I expect LaMichael James to come out running with a lot of determination as he stakes his claim for the Heisman.
1. Denard Robinson, Michigan
6 of 6
Denard Robinson bounced back in a big way despite losing to Wisconsin this past weekend.
Robinson leads the nation in rushing yards with 1,538.
The dynamic superstar played a fantastic game, totaling four touchdowns. He completed 64 percent of his passes for 239 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. As usual, he was incredibly impressive rushing the ball. He ran 22 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
If any one player is going to give Cam Newton a run for his Heisman money, it’s Denard Robinson.
